I see those shirts everywhere. I have no clue what they are referring to, whether it is more of a brotherly love message or one of an up-and-comer demanding respect from his peers.

And I’m pretty sure it will be a long time before racism ceases to exist, especially here in China. Kids here are brought up with stories of the atrocities of the Japanese in school and often from their extended families as well.

Nationalism in most forms is stupid and ignorant, and this certainly qualifies as one.

Politically nothing is going to happen because both governments share similar intentions of economic trade and betterment; and also with America since America is allied with Japan. As much as I like democracy, I do have to admit that the lack of it here shields the country from stupid populist movements changing the political landscape too much (unlike much of American politics). The government certainly isn’t suppressing the protests like they would a pro-democracy protest or a falonggong one, but it knows it isn’t helping its international reputation as most of the western media focused on the negativity of the protesters. One of the biggest problems is that throughout almost all of Chinese history, they have been able to bully their neighbors, and only with the arrival of the west a century and a half ago did things change, so it is hard to get out of that mentality.

I kept to myself yesterday so I missed most of what happened. Anything really bad specific to Chengdu? I’ve heard an American flag was burned somewhere in the country and a Japanese factory was set on fire in Qindao.

Anywhere to help you understand the local dialect?

Any of them brew up anything good using local spices and flavors that is something deliciously different from what is found back in the states (and impossible to get there)? But perhaps I’m asking for too much as I’m expecting someone as passionate about beer as some of the people I met while in beer country (that is Colorado).

Any bank will do as they don’t charge a commission for exchanging currency. The only thing is that you will probably have to wait a couple of days for the money to be sent in, and only after the money comes do you pay for it.

Whoa, people are taking this really seriously. All I asked for was for jokes and jabs that are derived from the sense of regional pride and directed at other regions; just people talking shit and having fun, and whether they are actually true is besides the point (and the reasons I was expecting were more leaning towards urban-legend, which are taken with a grain of salt).

I don’t know how well Kayak works for people outside of the US, but you can just switch the language settings and currency to suit whatever you want.

Also I don’t get the emphasis on the brands and logos; it’s as if they matter more then the aesthetics. Are people seen as being fashionable simply for adhering to certain brands? The list strikes me more as trying to look like you have social status then trying to look good (though I admit the two often overlap).

I lived in New Mexico for a couple years and visited Albuquerque a few times. Though just like in every city, there are cool people who live there, but on the whole the city is really shitty. I haven’t seen the show (though it is pretty high on my ‘to watch’ list), but all my friends who have seen it say it doesn’t paint New Mexico in a pretty light (which is mostly isn’t unless you are in the few nice areas or out in the wild). Just wanted to say this. Plus, is the show that popular among non-Americans? I don’t image meth or the drug wars to be a very relatable thing to Chinese, and it isn’t very popular in Britain either.

    [email protected]

That is the address that was given to me in the admission package. It said the deadline was July 13th, but the offices were (and still are) closed, so it is confusing. I’m sure if you email soon it shouldn’t be that much of a problem–but I’m just speculating. Better to call. Though it might not be the only address since the wording is, “Student who wants live on campus may email our office ([email protected])…” (emphasis is mine). Makes me ask if there are other ways of registering for a room which weren’t told to us.

But perhaps I’m missing something. I’m going to be on the main campus (Wangjiang) and are you too? If so, then where did you get the address for ‘Phoenix Girl’?

Lastly, I feel like an idiot for asking, but I just noticed it right now, what is Chuanda and is it distinct from Sichuan University, or perhaps just an alternate spelling of Chengdu?

So are there any clubs that play dubstep (not just Skrillex, who is terrible), drum and bass, trance, etc and the focus is on the dancing? Like there are b-boys everywhere, there has to be housers in Chengdu, right? Though if none of their music is played in the clubs, then they probably keep to themselves.

I emailed back in June when they were open, but still got no response. It’s odd that they put the deadline for giving declaring housing info to be during when they are closed.

Somewhat, but among the more hipsterish crowd–though most I know returned after a few years (or plan on it). People question what the hell they are doing and need time off to find a direction, but maybe that’s because I went to a liberal arts college I assume such things. I am one of them, but am returning to college in Chengdu.

I haven’t got an email either; hell, I’ve never received a reply from anyone from the college; the only thing that has worked has been a phone call.

But yeah, I’m also starting in late August after spending most of the month in Shandong. Starting college over and haven’t really studied the language (besides linguistic information that doesn’t have much in the way of practicality), so I’ll be a freshman.

P.S.: I’m from California and spent the last couple of years in college in New Mexico.
