Ya’an itself is not too hectic.  It’s just the road out of the hills from Baoxing on.  There’s a of industry based around stone, masonry, aggregate, concrete, etc. that keeps things pretty dusty.  On top of the development of new hydroelectric and better roads to make the area more safely accessible.

Just means the stretch from Ya’an and through Lushan especially is a cluttered dustbowl.  Especially the 2-way highway that drops down into Ya’an.  They’ve also go construction of a tunnel to bypass the original highway underway.

We managed in three days: Chengdu to Wolong, Wolong to Rilong and finally Rilong to Baoxing.

Our ride was supported.  There’s a 20km stretch of road just before Wolong that since 2008 has been notoriously bad.  This we had to drive.

Wolong to Rilong is a big day, putting you over Balangshan at 4481 meters.  The descent to Rilong is unbelievable however.

The third day puts you up another big peak, Jiajinshan at 4133 meters.  The descent is a white-knuckling washboard.  Fun regardless.  We finished at about 160km in Baoxing and drove back.  We done the road past that into Ya’an but it’s increasingly trafficked, dirty, etc.  Doesn’t make for much of an enjoyable finish to three beautiful days of riding.

Oh dang!  The slow ride sets out at 8 p.m.  Fast ride at 10 p.m.  Both leave from Natooke.

Also, this is free to attend.  Try to get here a bit before 8 so you don’t miss it!

Lastly, we do make our available rental bikes open to borrow for the ride.  This also costs nothing.  Only a few more weeks before our policy on this changes.  Want to book one?  Call the shop sometime today at 8504 2450.

Then go to Machu for a killer deal on Chimay.  Just not with our bike!

We’ll be riding through Dujiangyan over the pass to Rilong.  Although the roads are a bit rough it’s not so much mountain biking as it is a short 3 day tour.

For mountain biking I know there’s some groups that hire shuttles out to Longquan and do the trails out there on the weekends.  Ask around!

Don’t do it!  E-bikes are the devil’s work.

But seriously, spend more than 800, or even 1500.  That’s so cheap it hurts to think about how crummy the thing probably is.

Natooke proudly took 2nd, 3rd and 4th out of a field of 180 registrants.  Check out a few photos below.  The prize ceremony also had a unique quirk.  If you won a prize you had to do karaoke before you could collect.

Naturally, we chose to sing Queen’s, “We Are the Champions”.

Keep an eye out for the next event!

As promised, a quick video documenting the alleycat:

Here’s another quick video.  Chengdu brought home the bacon, winning the rollersprint contest by a margin, reaching a spinning speed of 72.5 km/h!

The second video is a bit slow and lacks sound.  Fortunately you can find it on instagram under the hashtag #natooke.

Hoping these videos will inspire some of you to take to the streets and start to explore your city.

Just a reminder: There are still a handful of tickets available for this coming Saturday.  Natooke not in your neck of the woods?  Can’t buy on Taobao?  Then if you know where U37’s UID Cafe is, you’re in luck! They also have tickets for sale.

I’d highly recommend checking this out and giving it your support to see that this festival returns in the coming years.

The showing in Chengdu, organized by 700Bike  (a cycling-centric media organization in Beijing) needs viewer support!  Not to mention the fact it’s an amazing set of short films.  Come check it out!

Super fun time had by all.  The games at each checkpoint were fun, weather couldn’t have been better, the turn-out was great, nice prizes, beer and a slew of nice bikes.  Kudos to Elliott for riding the Chopper for the duration.

Thank you to all that came out and shared some good times on a bike!!!!

This Dragon Boat Holiday weekend, Sunday June 1st, Natooke成都 will be leading another ride from the city center through a number of nice cycling areas through Shuangliu and Huayang for a 55km loop starting and finishing at the shop. We’ll have a chance to see some interesting landscapes and glimpse some of the development happening in and around the city we call home.

We’ll pass no small amount of urban sprawl and housing developments before plopping into the backyards of local subsistence farmers. Emerging from there we’ll pass through the glamorous “South Lake Scenic Area” before heading into some more remaining countryside that looks primed to become even more apartment blocks.

Anyone interested in participating should arrive at Natooke by 9:30am and we will set out by 10am.  The event is free and should take about 4.5-5 hours, which includes time to stop for a bite & beer.  We recommend each person or group has an inner tune repair kit/pump among them in the event of a puncture.  Safety equipment — helmets, gloves, and the like — always recommended.
