Wow, that’s pretty terrible Ian.. I don’t know if we did that exam, we didn’t go to the hospital much during my wife’s pregnancy and there were no complications which warranted adhering to their schedule, we scheduled to give birth at a hospital in Luzhou and did some random tests here in Chengdu.. I do remember they had some sorta schedule to abide by (at “No.1 hospital” in Chengdu near our place, like, number 1 as in the hospital number not the best.. haha) but we didn’t really care since there weren’t any complications. Also, it seems there were some parts of the test where we had to stay in the ‘normal area’ or whatever and get standard testing, and sometimes we’d go to this sorta fancy carved-wood-hallway style no-wait area, I think wife opened some card thru a business relationship tho, but either way I do know we didn’t spend much time at all at the hospital.

I seriously don’t trust docs here and the advice they give in general, seems it’s often a lot of bullshit and like Ben said – cover their ass – or get more tests, make more money, etc. Rather get test results and do my own research or for anything serious, send specific tests back to family doc back home for advice.

Old notebook for 450, offered 225, that’s less than a good dinner – I have use of a cheap laptop, I’ll jump in with a whopping 300 offer! That’s a dinner *with* drinks!

Never seen blackberries — seen blueberries and raspberries same as Charlie – expensive/imported, at lots of fruit places/auchan/etc. I’ve done some pretty good scouring at QingShiQiao, haven’t seen anything there. Just searched taobao, looks like there are TONS, maybe it’s very regional:

Good question and I haven’t heard it asked here before. I haven’t run ChromeOS and havne’t researched it in depth, however:

From what I understand you wont have any issue with an already configured Chromebook, ie. if you’re looking to activate or update, you’ll likely have connectivity issues in China.

Once your box is good to go elsewhere, travelling to China only really means you can’t use the blocked services – which are probably the common Google services you’d expect, like search/mail/youtube…the best bet is to get a VPN if you’re “moving” to Chengdu, because long-term, a VPN is gold. I used StrongVPN for ages (since 2007?) but recently changed to ExpressVPN, and used the tag from .. shit, another forum member and we did escape-the-room IRL together .. yeah, I used that when signing up, gave him and me both a free month, here’s mine 😀

    Express VPN

Why did I change — well, StrongVPN is very anti-torrenting and often I’d find for some reason (probably alcohol related) I’d be on VPN while uTorrent was still active, and get a warning, eventually warnings became so piled up it was a make or break. StrongVPN is great, I think it’s faster and more reliable than Express from my experiences, but Express gives no fuck about your traffic whatsoever – and to me, that is valuable as well.

Was it a misdemeanor or felony?

If it was a series issue that landed you in the clink, I’d suggest declaring it and using the ‘explain more:’ or whatever field, since it doesn’t seem to be a serious crime it wont matter much either way. China will let you get a tourist visa with a minor criminal offense, as long as it wasn’t a serious crime indicating ‘moral issues’ or whatever. If it was a misdemeanor, from what I’ve heard, don’t tick the box and move on. Things are constantly changing though, so who knows.

@niklas that’s very close to me, I’ll try to take a look as soon as it’s not pissing rain!

    @Ben
I didn’t notice that 2S – that’s weird that they put the 2 out in several models and the 2s only in 48″.

Upon looking it up on Mi’s site I found this comparison chart:
    http://www.mi.com/mitv48/specs/

Looks like the 2s doesn’t really offer any differences other than being thinner, but not so much thinner at the thickest part (where the main components are), where it’s just 1.2mm thinner. The weight of course, but that’s probably largely due to the size difference. When you said 2S I immediately thought “ah, now must wait…” but according to the specs on this chart, no reason to. I’ll try to look at one in person first, though!

I agree completely if safety really is an issue, objectively.. but just for fun, I looked up some of the ‘expensive’ bike brands like Specialized mentioned in the article, and see recalls on like, handlebars (or Aero Bars for example)… and the terms they use to describe them are so janky, “Aero Stem and Hydroformed Alloy”, hydroformed? That’s like.. as uber as hydro-infused mineral water.. ie. sounds like marketing nonsense. 😀

I like that article. I wonder how much actual quality difference exists, especially with quotes like “The problem is made worse by the fact that some of the factories that produce carbon fiber frames and components for those name brands, also produce some extras for the counterfeit market.”. I wonder about the ratio of people who, if given the option, would willingly pay 10x the price for a component that went through the official logistics channels of one of the brands than for a component from the same factory produced as ‘extra’ to sell on their own. I like companies who make great products and mark it up – even double the cost of manufacture, triple…maybe, in rare instances, but typically products marked up in the thousands of percent over cost are just straight up gaming on people’s desire to ‘want the best’ at any cost, ie. taking advantage.

There is an issue with getting a job sorted out while you’re still overseas, namely you’ll have to sign a contract up front and wont know what you’re getting into. Things can change upon arrival, can get f’d essentially – it’s a risk as well…

I’ve heard the same story – and it’s not just for returning Chinese diaspora but for Africans and people of colour in general – many Chinese parents prefer the ‘white face’ teachers, regardless of their actual qualification or ability. That doesn’t mean you can’t get work, just as you said, maybe less opportunity and more challenge in doing so. I think some people on the forum here have first-hand experience, but if you look Chinese and teach English, the bad stories are true.

I bought a bunch of truvape vaporizers from jd.com for myself and anyone who regularly comes over to my place (ie. no more smoking near baby), and use the truvape fluid.. bought a bunch of fluid when I went back to Canada but found it had started to clog the filter thing on the ecig. Happen to have smoked this shop’s fluid? They make their own fluid or sell a product that could otherwise be purchased online?

I buy tons of stuff from waifood.com – just had another shipment yesterday, can see if they have the sorts of food that fit your diet – I trust ’em and they deliver, free, the same day most of the time depending on what you buy (if you order fresh bagels at noon, for example, likely have to wait til the next day). For our vegetables we typically go to Auchan, ideally earlier in the day which seems to have the best product selection, and they have a section of pre-packaged but slightly-more-expensive ‘selected’ veg which I believe has some kinda stickers on them that indicate organic, on some of them.. anyways it’s much higher quality veg and we typically eat salads (lettuce/tomato/carrot/cucumber) like 5 times/week.
