Hm.. what I was more concerned with is whether or not it allows China bank cards to submit cash to your paypal ‘charge’ account. I know with my credit card, I’ve had to use PayPal to pay for something, but it only charged out to a merchant – while my PayPal has my Canadian CC registered, I don’t think I can put cash to the paypal service itself…but just pay out to a merchant via the PayPal service, almost like an intermediary. If you’re able to give this a shot and transfer ‘cash’ to your paypal account, then extract it to a foreign bank, I think money transfer problems would be solved..would be good to hear once someone does this successfully.

I only brought it up because the article was talked about/linked above.. I’m always down for good beats.

Did you read the article and interview in detail? Some things just struck me raw, “eminently placed to make such remarks” – well, the stuff that I didn’t like was his implications that the masses have bought into the internet looking for ‘spiritual salvation’, but he’s better than that and people should follow in his footsteps, he’s giving advice/criticism that appears to be from a soapbox of arrogance. Stuff like “And I still engage with technology, but I don’t look to it for salvation.”, “the way I walk the tightrope is that I use the internet, and try to avoid letting it use me.”, and “I’m on my computer 10 hours a day as it is”.. I just dislike the preachy attitude in the first half.

I got chips and salsa too – were your chips dark in colour with a pink mushy salsa? Like I said, maybe I just got unlucky.. I’m not opposed to trying again, especially since it seems everyone else gives it good reviews…

Have you tried this yet? It looks to me like it’s for “payments” rather than directly transferring funds, but I don’t know the details on PayPal or the limits they’ve got around this.

If it replaced wire transfers, I have a hard time seeing banks be so cooperative..

The tacos (tacos/salsa) were like bland bits of cardboard before…is the “taco thursday” different? Anyone with favorable reviews of the taco dishes? I’m a big fan, but quite frankly, unless I was just unlucky they had nothin’ on a bag of like..sabrina’s bought tostitos / salsa.

When I think Tacos/Burritos in China, I can only think of one place: Cantina Agave in Shanghai. I wish there was something like *that* here.

RE: Shadow, not a comment on his music as I’ve not heard any, but his interview with wired seems like he’s floating on a protesting cloud without a base – or a well thought out perspective. Many points in his interview seem like presentations of straw-man arguments, essentially calling the internet an ‘entity’ which is failing ‘us’, etc..basically protesting techno-corporatism and mislabeling the internet as being ‘sold’ to people as a ‘savior’ in a spiritual sense… I’m not really a fan of that kinda nonsense.

I’m not leaving Chengdu til the 3rd though, so might check out his tunes on the 2nd and ignore the interview content and his positions on licensing. 😀

I know it seems ‘weird’ to have a squat toilet to a western observer, but I actually prefer them..*especially* in public washrooms, no physical contact required, and the body’s position seems to make everything happen much more cleanly and complete. 😉

RE: Chengdu weekend trips, if you’re not planning to fly, there are only a couple places within the 2-3 hour range worth visiting..but all of them will require your familiarity with *squat toilets*!

That running clip is *hilarious* for sure.

RE: Cap’t America – I saw it while I was in Qingdao on its opening weekend, it was worthwhile. I wouldn’t say it was an outstanding movie, but it was enjoyable enough to not be like “wtf what a waste” and my girl enjoyed it. It was a little corny, mind you..

RE: Foreign films in China(Chengdu), I’ve noticed a lot of B movies releasing here months after they were released elsewhere…movies like Skyline, Sanctum (oz), etc.. Skyline was f’ing HORRIBLE, actually left early, Sanctum was misleading in that I didn’t know anything about it and was expecting monsters or something, but it was worthwhile.

Keep a VPN and IMDB app on your phone and when you pop by to see what’s playing, you’ll have more information than you started with 😀 I’ve noticed a lot of theaters here giving big discounts lately also, once I went up to the iMax near happy valley and they were playing 10rmb 3d movies.

Losing a passport *sucks*, especially if your own country is treating you like a criminal to get it replaced. I’m glad I’m Canadian!

I lost my passport, also.. I flew to Shanghai on a stamped doc that took an afternoon to sort out (filed police report at police station, PSB gave me right doc).. had like 3 minute fuss about “what is this?” document instead of passport at the security check, then upon arrival walked in, filled in my docs / references, and partied with my friends in Shanghai for a few days while it was processed.

Very stupid mistake. “Yelling at the visa officer for rejection” – heard lots of women do this after they’re married or have a kid and want to go back. The US doesn’t hand out visas just because you get married or procreate, and if you choose to freak out and yell at the officer or swear or anything similar, they mark that in your record and the next application will be most likely an immediate rejection. Also, it’s not “child abuse” nor “neglect” to reject someone for a Visa at all, and I’d be shocked and amazed if any court would hear that kind of accusation…but ya, I get that you’re an angry mom who just wants to accompany your family, and ‘they don’t understand’. 😀

Arrested there once – but I was urinating on the front gate. 2004 I think. They protest if you walk on the walk, but if you’re white and pretend not to be ignorant / American and not understand, they don’t bother you much..then again, I haven’t tried since the pee-challenge incident.

If you’re into or interested in US TV shows, I found the best source is eztv.it – download speed is surprisingly fast, no advertisements to deal with, and most good shows available.

There are other torrent sites with much larger variety, but eztv does a good job of filtering them, sorting them, and ensuring whatever you’re getting is the better version that’s released shortly after the show is aired – not as much likelihood of going through a bunch of torrents from different release groups that have varying results. I hit it daily and load up my queue. 😀

Gym with no showers? Shoot me now.

    Quote:
Are there any gyms in Chengdu that cost 1000-1300 yuan for a year membership?”

I went to a gym near the southwest minority university when I lived over there, and it was like 900rmb/yr at that time. It may be similar. They usually run deals for annual memberships.. and you can negotiate on top of that. I can’t remember the exact name or shops nearby..but it’s at the main square nearby southwest minority uni at a |- intersection. I think it’s a chain actually..and it was pretty big, with showers, and always had a couple fans on. The problem is the fans were pretty sparse, so while they’re powerful, you can only really feel it if you go stand directly below it.

    @Charlie RE: “Past that”

Are you past that where you’re at? Dude, it’s still SUPER sweltery for me the last couple weeks. I have a fan on me at all times at home, otherwise I’ll start dripping.

Granted, it’s 32 floors up and heat rises, but I found the last couple weeks to be really warm in Chengdu, especially with some sun (nice to have a deck and get some) I’m hoping it cools down in September..but I don’t think it’s over yet!

I learned my Chinese pickin’ up girls at bars / clubs, ones not frequented by foreigners where you’re kind of forced into a situation where you have a lot of incentive to really pay attention and figure things out 😉
