Prior to this, I had no problem doing large amounts in the thousands. I’ve read that transaction amounts are limited only to the amount you can transfer per year. The maximum amount you can transfer is $50,000 per year.

I forgot to mention that you can only do one $500 transaction per day which is absurd.

So if you wanted to transfer $2,000 it would take a lengthy 4 day process and not to mention the fees incurred each time you a mere $500 transaction.

The only loophole that the bank mentioned was to have a Chinese friend transfer the money from their account to your international account. But they said that this must be done at the main branch of the Chinese person’s bank.

Nice photos! I stayed at hostel near to photo number 6 and some dude was wailing on that bridge with a hammer all night. Drove me nuts.

And those stairs. Stairs everywhere. Last July every nook and cranny was plastered with photos of that armed robber who was on the run. Exciting times.

Will have to check out the hot springs next time.

    Usually it’s a procedural miscommunication/misunderstanding.

I’ve gotten pissed when a driver refused to take me to a destination but then I later realized it’s because a lot of the two way roads here change to one way lanes at peak periods making travel by bus one of the only options.

Many drivers also refuse to make U turns to get to your destination. You have to be on the right side of the road in the direction of your destination. This is true for a lot of the major cities that I’ve been in.

Haha. My gal and I are headed to Dali on Saturday for about 11 days. There were some great flight deals from Chengdu on qunar.com.

Have you been to Dali before? Could you suggest some things to do? I’m hoping for some tranquility out there as well.

I’d go with Xiamen. All of my coworkers and friends that I’ve met in China have moved there and love it. It offers great air, hiking, beaches, very bike-able, lots of work, and the proximity to Taiwan is a plus. That being said, when deciding on whether to move to Chengdu or Xiamen back in July, I chose Chengdu because all of my coworkers and friends that I’ve met in China have moved to Xiamen and love it. There’s something about it that I just don’t buy.

I visited Dalian a few years ago and it was so-so. It’s just a “new” city that’s modern in many ways but doesn’t have a lot of cultural identity that Chengdu has. The locals I met there all said that the city was more of a developing economic zone and that it lacked a rich cultural heritage. As modern cities go, Dalian is starting to have more issues with air pollution and the oil spill in 2010 doesn’t help out the beach scene either.

I think Kunming has some decent air and might be a pretty cool place to live. I will be passing through there during Spring Festival and scope it out.

Hey Jessica, eating healthy can be done here but I agree with Ray, it can be quite a feet sometimes.

In Chengdu I’ve found it a bit easier to do than the small town I was previously in near Changchun. There, “wheat bread” was just dyed brown and my Chinese friends were convinced all the “organic” food was fake. But Chengdu offers more options and the quality of what you want will be a bit higher than local produce.

Be sure to purchase a vegetable/fruit spray which I know you can pick up at Ole supermarket. A juicer is also an essential item for preparing your own healthy food.

Always try and follow food scandals happening in China via CCTV or the China Daily. I’m sure there are better news sources for this. It seems like every few months some food or another is tainted. The last one I saw was something about that awesome brown dessert bread found in the Carrefours.

I recently found this vegetarian restaurant down the street from Laenna’s Bakery and it’s my new go to healthy eating spot. Water Lotus (not to be confused with Lotus on the Water) offers tons of mock meat tofu dishes that aren’t soaking in oil like a lot of the dishes you’ll find at typical restaurants.

Heres a link and I hope this helps. http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=32674

Good point on staying hydrated cause I’m an avid coffee drinker, but I do have other symptoms like congestion and shortness of breath which is why I generalized it to the air pollution. I will be getting out of town for the holiday for some much needed fresh air so hopefully that will help bring my health back to an equilibrium.

I originally picked up Bear Star at the supermarket at Raffles, “Treat” I think it’s called? And now I’ve recently seen it at the Carrefour at Hongpailou, so it must be stocked at most of them.

I’ve been digging the Bear Star zinfandel. It’s about 138 and available at most supermarkets. I’ve found that you get what you pay for as the wines under 100 usually leave you with a nice hang over for the next day.

I thought about the HK factor, but calculated that the VAT is about equivalent to a round trip flight to HK from Chengdu plus accommodation.

Are there any other reasons why you would purchase an apple product in HK vs. the mainland? I’ve bought a few ipod shuffles here and haven’t had any major issues.

    Thanks again.
