Tea Tree oil is great stuff, it is great for body piercing healing and I really like the “Australian plantation” toothpicks, numby-minty deliciousness will have you knawing away for hours.

So you can get those essential oil burners? Like the hippie style ones with an open wick on the bottom and a metal bowl to hold oil? Funky stuff.

I’m embarrassed to admit that there were actually screens on most of my windows, just many were hard to pull out or broken. I bought one of those plug in smelly paper gizmos. I can’t imagine the scent is very healthy nor do I like to think of how much trash it produces because of those single-use synthetic pads!

Proposal: New folks should host a housewarming party and hopefully other folks on CL forum will attend. This way, we can avoid paying 20+ RMB per beer getting to know each other at a bar that most likely plays evil music. However, at Jah bar I’ll gladly pay 20RMB for BeerLao great company, and an investment in the local live music scene.

Your psychology research sounds intriguing,in which towns are you conducting your research? I’d be down to hang out and help you get your bearings in Chengdu. Yeah Expat bars are okay for meeting people, but some folks are a bit snobbish when it comes to letting new people into “their circle”. I know this sounds “highschool-ish” but I suppose it depends on where you go, and what kind of night it is.

Still no cellphone? A basic cellphone with chinese/english texting ability (you will lose it or have it stolen at least twice) will make your life a lot easier.

    take care.

    SEA style w00t:

“Hey Baby I live in Tongzilin, wanna climb under my mosquito net?”

@kuma you sure that isn’t toxic?

Thinking of going the screen installation route

“I like electro, I like retro I like ghetto, house and techno.”- Green Velvet.

Set up my numark USB controller last night, carry-on was a good call as none of the knobs broke. Working on a mix soon mainly noisy electro/ acid-house/dnb I like to dance.

Ah I replied just as you wrote that Ben. Yeah, I think I’ll look into that rather than mindlessly pursue an arts and crafts project.

Those things freak me out. Maybe I could buy a mosquito net, cut it into a rectangle and duct tape it over the window.

The southern part of Chengdu is closest to the Universities which also coincides with the highest concentration of foreginers. For a relaxed and convenient place to live try to find an apartment/hotel in the Yulin area. There are quiet shaded (yes real live trees) good restaurants, tea houses etc. and it is still close to shopping centers. Avoid living in central or Northern Chengdu as it is far too busy. However the neighborhood near the Mix hostel isn’t bad. I used to be a volunteer bike courier so I know the city pretty well.

Despite living in China on and off for the past 3 years I have neglected to open a bank account. For a while I enjoyed the novelty of keeping large sums of cash in my bedroom. Perhaps it was nostalgia for bygone days as a crazed scarface Raver kid.

What has really kept me at bay over the years were the nefarious investment policies of Bank of China ICBC and CCB respectively.

In terms of social and environmental responsibility, Fujian-based Industrial Bank of China (IBC) is an outlier when it comes to recognizing the need for environmental protection and fiscal transparency. Checkout BankTrack.org they also have reports for aforementioned banks and have links to document IBC’s recognition of the the Equator Principles.

    http://www.banktrack.org/show/bankprofiles/industrial_bank

The downside is that IBC lags behind its competitors in terms of convenience in Chengdu. There are only a handful of branches in the city and a small scattering of ATMs. However they recently opened a new office on 人民南路 just north of the Western tower. I think I’m going to open an account soon, sure its a little far from my house, but I’d rather “put my money where my mouth is”.

In other news, lets hope that the recent IMF sex-scandal will force them to turn over a new leaf and put an end to the rape of third world economies…

Word. Yep I got back last night after a 30 hour day. Jet lag has got the best of me for the time being.

I’d like to echo some of the anti-car sentiments already posted.

I live in Tongzilin and work north of Tianfu square and make the 5.5 km trip each way on a rusty road bike.

When I first came to Chengdu in August of 2008 I didn’t think traffic could get any worse. Alas I was mistaken!

If you find that biking is too slow or sweaty consider an E-bike.

I’d be down to do some real hiking in Sichuan. I’ve climbed extensively in the White and Green Mts of New Hampshire and Vermont and would love to devote a few weekends to outdoor excursions. I’ve regretted not taking as many trips in past years in Chengdu, but with Panda club closed my nights are a bit more tame.
