At the 2nd ring road which crosses with Ren Min nan lu there is a Wang Fujin mall. At the first floor in the back is a big supermarket

I’m interested in this, but I can’t picture this mall. I think 2nd and RenMinNan cross at the flyover at the Kempinski Hotel? but where’s the Wang Fujin mall?

Could you describe it on the map? http://g.co/maps/pqb99

I’ve tried a couple of places, here. Both appalling.

So I too would be interested to hear a recommendation.

there’s certainly not the market of catering to visitors there is in Hong Kong or Bangkok, or even somewhere like Beijing.

Ian, it’s hard to do this over the internet.

if it’s urgent you could try:

    http://www.myhouseinchina.com/

though I think they cater for a different budget.

    there’s

    the Yulin one.

    not sure the situ there.

I’m afraid maybe the best is for you or your GF to get stuck in, choose a neighborhood and trawl the agency’s. You’ll need some chinese for that.

    or try

    http://fang.taobao.com/chengdu/zufang

that’s Chinese too. but good for at least market rates if you can manage it.

Yes the shuttle goes from the side road at MinShan Hotel.

    HERE

I think it’s starts at 7am and I’ve never known it to not be running from the airport at night, past 2200 for sure.

Olivia I’ve just read your first message. I’m the first to say it’s none of my business, but let me give you my understanding of the job markets here.

1000RMB Waitress – the lowest paid job.

4000RMB Chinese Software Tester- 1-2 years experience, still requires very close supervision.

8000RMB + some house allowance (maybe an extra 1000) .a newly TEFL qualified western english teacher with no previous experience.

I may be a little out with these, but not much. I guess others are free to comment if they disagree. If you’re moving from Beijing you’ve obviously got some China experience. Again please excuse me, I don’t want to pry, take this as FYI. I just wouldn’t want an unscrupulous business telling you living expenses and salaries are ridiculously low in Chengdu. I understand everyone’s situation is different though.

Also if the Sofitel (binjiang lu) is the one near minshan and jinjiang hotels then it’s by Ren Min Lu the biggest transport artery in the city. I don’t know what constitutes ‘happening’ but many foreigners and their most popular hangouts are 1-2km south. You can catch a bus or metro between the two every 2-3 minutes.

I lived in Beijing before coming to Chengdu, I visit back there a couple of times a year.

I’m sure, based on absolutely no scientific data at all, the air is better here. I’d be interested to comment more if anyone wants to start another thread.

I’d also agree with all of Rays comments.

except that I really don’t find the traffic that bad at all. having commuted in the US, UK, Italy and others.

Maybe I’m lucky with the routes I take, or I benefit from bus lanes because I take the bus most places. Again I’d be happy to get to the bottom of these opinions on traffic if someone wants to start a dedicated thread.

@ Danielle – Short answer: no, don’t pack woolies for a trek.

    This week it’s a blamy 25 Degrees

    pointless anecdote:

We went a couple of years ago in March. Without thinking too much left with Chengdu winter hats, heavy coats, and boots. En route, we were told we were going at the latest possible time before it got “too hot to be comfortable”. When you walk out of the Jinghong station it’s clearly a tropical climate, we walked straight into town (got more than a few stares) bought sandals shorts and t-shirts, then mailed all our ridiculous winter clothes back to Chengdu.
