    yeah, ChinesePod.

if you don’t mind paying, I think their online services are pretty good. though I find sometimes their longer podcasts with the banter and explanation on them can be kinda a drag, there are versions with only the dialog too.

I think you can get a trail with them, though I guess it’s limited.

the offer’s there: if you wanna come to mine with a hard disk or laptop and a couple of cold cans, I think I can dig out a couple of GBs mixed levels for you, I live just off the metro. PM me.

hey Sandra, I think I’ve been in your position and also know many that have.

if you plan to return to the west to re assume your professional career, you might consider studying Chinese language full time at one of the (reasonably priced) universities that offer it.

out of out group of expats, some girlfriends did this, others tried to find jobs/study part time. in the end we were unanimous that the ones that studied full time got the most out of their time here, and had the most to take away too – resumé wise

but I know everyone’s different just sharing my experience.

Again: PM me if you want some details.

googe’in will quickly give you ‘the’ payable podcast. If there’s any chance you’re as cheap as me you might want to get some GBs copied of them from a friend.

for a couple of beers. I could be that friend 🙂

    Hello Kestan and welcome.

I think the Chengdu’s Women’s Club is pretty family orientated.

    http://www.chengduiwc.org/

As far a I’ve seen families tend to head to Peters Tex Mex in TongZiLin, if you know where that is.

and even though your children aren’t school age, you might try falling in with the families crowd at one of the international schools? I guess if they have school age children they might have younger ones too?

Just ideas, I don’t think many of the people who post on this forum have families, but I could be way wide of the mark.

@Charlie, thank you, again. Just what I was looking for.

I’m now kinda embarrassed how far up my results list that page appears when I try to google again. I really hope that’s because it’s in my history now :/

no, I’m sure the train is fine. it’s ‘sealed’ transport and doesn’t go thru the effected area anyway.

Hi BD, I’ve been trying to track this myself.

I’m sure some parts of Northwest Sichuan and the boarding areas of Gansu and Qinghai, are closed now and might be thru summer. It’s often speculation and communication is not very clear.

There is some first hand news available on thorn tree.

I’m sure Dunhuang (炖煌) and Qinghai Lake (青海湖) are and will remain open, neither are very remote and both are extremely popular so would draw too much attention if they were closed. it’s the remote areas nearer the provincial borders that are closed.

Another (English speaking) sources might be travel agencies and hostels in the area. though they will only give you a current status and can’t guarantee the future.

I wouldn’t suggest traveling that way in a straight line over land to there from here, you’re bound to run into trouble, I don’t know if that’s what you’re considering.

@Sascha, I’m sorry I missed this I would have been interested to join. Will the article be on CDliving or somewhere else?

I’m really interested to find a back-up of the bookworm for small meetings/functions. something with an OHP or big-screen monitor/TV.

did you find anything in that vein?

hey Pardhu, It’s been a year or two since I did this, but I can share what (I think) I know.

Terminology wise I think you need a ‘Pesidence Permit’ type -> Working.

To get these instead of Visas, you need a ‘foreign experts certificate’ mine looked like another passport, then with this I think you apply for the residence permit.

Because there seems to be many foreign architects in town, I guess this is an industry (along with IT) that you can get a foreign experts certificate.

In my case my company arranged it all, so really try to push yours to, I guess the information is there somewhere for businesses to use foreigners this way. if you live/work in the new development zone maybe the local PSB can instruct. or the central PSB.

A gotcha I can think of: if you’re on a visa, maybe you’re not supposed to not be paid/on a local contract. if it comes to light as part of this process you have been. things might be bad. and they seem to be more strict than usual at the moment.

hey Aamir, I haven’t heard much about cricket, but much of the sports ‘scene’ is based around the Shamrock Pub, or there’s a British pub near blue Caribbean Square I think maybe has some sports stuff too, maybe try their websites?

hey, in the spirit of ebays vendor feedback. Should Vincent look to sell something else on CDL, and a potential buyer looks to this thread for referral, I can say my experience was:

AAA+++ communicative, patient, and ‘straight-up’. Recommended

I’m somewhat less enthusiastic about him publicly shaming me over the pathetic state of my hardware though. 🙂

    Thank you Vincent.

Pro tip, do no trust anyone who tells you that they know of a great Indian restaurant here. There are none.

Hey, has anyone tried the ‘new’ one near Xinnanmen, I heard it was cheap, dirty and cheerful. But I haven’t tried myself yet.

    Anyone have firsthand experience?
