I don’t have his number, but he’s at Paname every day pretty much. I saw him there as recently as last week. Good luck-
CharlieKeymasterI’d be interested in finding out what kind of qualified teachers are available for this also. Have you checked out some of the Chinese teachers that have posted on the forum? Most seem to be one-on-one teachers but at least one organized school (with a website, etc) has posted on here.
I think studying at a university (HSK prep) is an option but I don’t know much about it.
CharlieKeymasterI went to Leg & Whistle to see the US vs England game (Shinichi was there!) and it was super packed. Unfortunately I didn’t head out to see the Germany game last night but I’m rooting for them after the United States. I don’t expect the US to go too far but Germany looks strong.
I’ve been watching some games from home using this link: http://bugu.cntv.cn/live_cctv5/index.shtml
CharlieKeymasterAwesome, thanks for the Wikipedia article.
Email topic notifications is the feature that I’m most excited about adding to the forum, but the problem is one of infrastructure. Unfortunately it’s a limitation of the forum setup that I have – it’s the price I pay for having a forum that’s integrated into the Chengdu Living design. But the good news is that this is functionality that they’re adding very soon.
CharlieKeymasterGood points, Ben. I don’t have much to add but I think you summed up well the inadequacies of the speed test we’re using to gauge speeds. I find that speed varies a lot in Chengdu depending on network traffic and daily usage hours. Encrypting your wifi network is super important as well – I’ve noticed other people on my home wifi network before which affected speed greatly. For anyone who doesn’t know how to setup your router properly, here’s a quick guide to get you started: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelesssecurity/tp/wifisecurity.htm
I’ve logged into the router at local bars and restaurants because they don’t change their routers admin password. Don’t leave that on the default.
CharlieKeymasterFunny that you post this just as there are two posts for local guides that appear in the marketplace! Check those out.
CharlieKeymasterSeriously, Ultimate Frisbee in Chengdu is pretty damn cool. Good luck with everything.
CharlieKeymasterYou can put images in posts by hitting this button:
and pasting the address to your image. You need a place to host the images, though. Something like http://imageshack.us will work, or you can send the images to me and I’ll help you add them here.
May 17, 2010 at 5:02 pm in reply to: first time going to chengdu. need help learning mandarin. #11629CharlieKeymasterThere’s another post on visas here, as well as a post on Chengdu Living: https://www.chengduliving.com/getting-a-business-visa-in-hong-kong/
Regarding studying, someone has recently posted about a Mandarin Club in the south of Chengdu. Sounds like it’s worth checking out – they even have a website with prices and information on the services they offer. Good luck-
CharlieKeymasterHow can we find the location in San Sheng Xiang? I’m interested in checking it out one day when I’m in the area.
CharlieKeymasterHard to give a good recommendation without knowing more about your situation, but Ben posted the essential information. Your options are student (X), resident (Z), or business (F) visa. You could get a really long duration tourist (L) visa and just live on that. You won’t be able to “officially” work or study on it, though.
Here’s something I posted recently when I went to Hong Kong to buy a business visa, you might find it helpful: https://www.chengduliving.com/getting-a-business-visa-in-hong-kong/
CharlieKeymasterYour best bet is probably Sichuan University or the Minorities University in Chengdu. If you go to either of those places and inquire you can get all the information you need.
Unfortunately I don’t know of any small private places to learn Chinese in that kind of academic environment without signing up at University. If there were a private school that’s catered to the needs of its students and didn’t require so much commitment, that would be a great option. Otherwise, there’s always self-study. Good luck-
CharlieKeymasterI believe the short answer is yes. For more information on rules and regulations, check out the Giving Birth in Chengdu series of posts which you can find here: https://www.chengduliving.com/series/
Good luck George-
CharlieKeymasterI haven’t heard of cable service in Chengdu, so I think it’s a safe assumption that all of the answers you’ve gotten so far are from ADSL users. A speed test like this is also very subjective – the result will depend on time of day, traffic on the local and regional network, etc.
CharlieKeymasterNobody listens to chinese rap? for shame! check out SoftLipa, he’s pretty dope: http://www.douban.com/artist/softlipa/
Here’s me on Douban, too: http://www.douban.com/artist/justcharlie/
CharlieKeymasterInternet provider: China Telecom
Advertised speed: I believe it’s advertised as 4mb
Monthly cost: 120rmb, residential plan
The speeds are really unreliable, though. My download caps at almost 400kb/s but sometimes it takes forever to upload a 1mb file via FTP. Hope this helps-
edit: wow, I’m downloading the new episode of Lost at 450kb/s now. Internet speeds are definitely improving here quickly.
April 19, 2010 at 12:12 pm in reply to: 2010 Zebra Music Festival — Xiongmao techno stage lineup #11588CharlieKeymasterLooking forward to it! Losing the xiong mao stage would have been a big blow to the festival.
April 19, 2010 at 12:11 pm in reply to: first time going to chengdu. need help learning mandarin. #11587CharlieKeymasterThere have been a few posts in the marketplace advertising Chinese lessons, I would check some of those out. If you go to Grandma’s Kitchen on ren min Nan Lu you’ll find a few other people advertising their services there. Good luck!
CharlieKeymasterWelcome to Chengdu 🙂
CharlieKeymasterYou have a much better chance of selling these if a potential buyer doesn’t have to contact you for prices on each individual book. Post the prices for everyone to see and people will know if they’re interested or not before contacting you and you can save everyone time. Good luck-
