Friends of mine tried to visit Leshan last Monday 22 april, but were turned back by huge traffic jams of vehicles trying to get in and out of the Ya’an earthquake area. I’d check that out before going if I were you.

Apart from those already mentioned, there is also Events in Chengdu, Friends in Chengdu, ViaVia traveler’s cafe Chengdu.

Many people turn up in several groups. If you search there may be more.

On Linkedin, you could try China Guanxi Network, or Chengdu Expats (a subgroup of Expats Working in China), if you search there may be more business-oriented groups as well.

The Chengdu facebook page lists http://sichuan-quake-relief.org/ as an organisation to send your donations to. The website looks outdated, though, I’m not sure if this organization is still active?

Ben is right. Best advice: Duck, Cover and Hold On. So get away from windows, hide under something solid like a strong table and hold on to the legs in case the table moves. Most casualties are caused by objects flying around and debris falling from buildings.

We were on the 29th floor and it was pretty scary though…

For the curious non-Dutch: on 30 April we will get a new King. We are organizing a small party to watch the show on telly and have drinks and typical Dutch snacks together. If you happen to know any people from Holland in Chengdu, let them know!

I just visited the TongZhi dragon kilns, south of Chengdu (about one hour drive), they accept students who want to learn traditional pottery making techniques for 20 rmb per hour, or so they told us. Pm me if you would like the details. They do stoneware, such as glazed pickle jars and garden pots, not porcelain.

For anyone interested in this subject an update, we found a workshop! Yesterday I visited the TongZhi dragon kiln in Yongxingzhen, south of Chengdu. A very interesting place, they make a large variety of pottery with different techniques and still fire in the typical dragon kilns. You can also go there (alone or with a (school) group) to try to make your own pottery, decorate porcelain vases (specially made for this purpose only), or just to watch the experts shape and fire their pots. PM me if you are interested in the details.

We contacted the GuiHua town workshops but they were very reluctant and seemed not to be interested in a visit from us.

I’ve just visited the TongZhi Long Yao (Tongzhi dragon kiln) in Yongxingzhen, south of Chengdu. They make a large variety of all kinds of pots, including glazed pickle pots (the ones you can close air-tight with a lid sitting in a rim filled with water) in various sizes. If you pm me I can send you the contact details and directions.

I’d say smart casual or casual would do. You see a lot of very sharply dressed people on the street here, though. For men, the same should go I guess, depending on the company and the level. I’ve even seen men show up in their work overall on a gala dinner party, where I myself felt completely overdressed in my nice evening dress while the other women were wearing their winter coats and woolen hats because of the cold… A friend once was invited to a business dinner in a spa, and people thought it was very weird she would not buy a bathing suit at the reception desk to join in the fun… Once I wore a pant suit to a meeting and people were intimidated by it, thought I was the director of some expensive business or so.
