I agree, the outdoor pool at Orchard villas is the nicest pool I have been to, and opens the earliest and closes the latest in the season. The outdoor pool at Jinguan Xincheng is also good but it only seems to open for two months at most.

The problem with most housing complex swimming pools is that they are not maintained and quickly deteriorate so much they end up closed all the time.

So it would be great to create a list of good pools to hang out in with the children now its getting hot.

If you want to donate stuff now to the music box charity bring and buy sale in June, you can. Just phone the Music Box and say when you want to come round to drop stuff off. All the money earned by selling the children’s books, toys and clothes that you donate to the bring and buy sale will go to impoverished village schools in Sichuan, and any useful unsold children’s stuff can be sent to the schools as well, since they desperately lack books and toys. So phone the MUsic Box on 61555750 if you have any of these children’s goods. Thanks a lot.

thatcher would have been voted out in her first relection if it hadnt been for the falklands war and her cynical and masterly seduction of the voters into dreaming of Britain’s past glories and influence in the world.

Its hard to play ‘what if’ histories. But Thatcher ruled over a time where the poor were taxed to fund the rich, creating a social inequality and disconnect in British society that Blair failed to redress and which continues to blight the UK economy, society and well-being of its citizens. Her legacy of eroding the concept of ‘society’ and communal well-being is a terrible one that no party seems able or willing to address and rectify.

There is no even-handed way to look at Thatcher. She did a great job of rewriting history by exaggerating the ills of the late 1970s to justify her assault on the unions and state ownership.

I do think it is reasonable to say that many of the ills of the UK now have their roots in the economic policies and social vision of the Thatcher years.

Everyone with children’s clothes, toys and books, please think about donating them to the Music Box annual charity bring and buy fair which will be held on Sunday June 2nd at Eton HOuse school. All the proceeds from the summer fair and bring and buy sale go to impoverished rural primary schools. This year the Music Box will continue to support the 11 village schools at Huaxi Township in Bazhong in north-east Sichuan, and is hoping also to help support a village school near Gonga Mountain. Last year we raised almost 10,000Yuan and the success of the bring and buy sale depends on people’s generosity in donating good-quality second-hand children’s toys, books and clothes. Please contact the Music Box on 028 61555750 or LOuise on 13709015291 to find out how and where to donate goods. The Music Box will send out details of the Bring and Buy Summer Fair nearer the time.

you can buy the cards at the little kiosks at the metro stations but they are only open during the day and close around 5pm. Having a card gives you a discount every time you use the metro and you can also use it on the buses as well (also discounted). So its really worth getting one. When you swipe your card on the metro or bus it tells you how much money you have left, and you can top up your card at the metro ticket offices.

A reminder to everyone that the Music Box Open House is on Monday morning. Look forward to seeing lots of parents, babies and toddlers there. Xiaotuzi (Little Rabbit) are holding a children’s clothes sale during the Open House and Blue Sheep will be displaying some of their wares, so it will be a great morning.

yes, the waldorf school has a huge waiting list so is effectively a non-starter. But there are lots of waldorf style kindergartens opening and I have heard even a primary school in Flower City, if that is the kind of education that appeals.

the three kindergartens and schools mentioned above are all very expensive. Since your child is bilingual you might want to choose a Chinese kindergarten, though many people, including myself, find it hard to accept the more structured education style. A good alternative would be a family kindergarten which are proving very popular with middle-class and educated Chinese families and most of these family kindergartens are run on more ‘western’ style education principles of learning through play. Quite a few of them are influenced by the Waldorf Steiner education or Montessori. I know there is one just opened in Tongzilin because one of the teachers used to be my daughter’s Waldorf kindergarten teacher. If you are interested, let me know and I can give you the details.

The Music Box is not for full-time kindergarten age children. It runs morning parent and toddler sessions. But it does have a weekend class for kindergarten children that specializes in music and language which might be worth checking out.

if you’re interested in the music box, they are holding an open morning on Monday March 18th from 10am to 12pm. A good chance to meet other parents and see what the Music Box has to offer.

The Music Box is three minutes walk east from Tongzilin Metro Stop (exit D) in Fengde Wanrui Building on the corner of Hangkong Road and Xinxiwang Road (there’s a big Oakwood sign on top of the building). Go to the back of the building by the Bank of China and Block A is between Starbucks and the Seven-Eleven. The Music Box is on the 18th floor.

the music box is for children aged 0-6. During the school day we have daily morning sessions for 0-3 year olds. We also have a great Music/English class for children aged 3-6 which runs on a Saturday afternoon.

The Music Box also hosts birthday parties and these can be for children any age. Many expatriate parents have booked birthday parties at the Music Box and loved them. Birthday parties can be booked for Sunday afternoons.

Music Box playgroup sessions which include movement, storytelling, art, play and music activities are every morning Tuesday to Sunday. The group activities are from 10.30am to 11.30am but people are welcome to come from 9.30am and many parents bring lunch or buy lunch downstairs and leave after lunch.

At the moment people can drop in in the afternoons for free play but we hope to open afternoon playgroup sessions as well since they really are fabulous for children.

We are redesigning our English wehsite and it will show more information. The best thing is to phone the Music Box for info.

Sascha, glad to know how much your children like the Music Box. Of course we would like to start afternoon sessions. Please let me know who else would like an afternoon session and we can put one on!
