Hey Zak you are so adorable. I dont know if you know this but there are several other libraries around town, including the wuhou district one near gaoshengqiao and 2nd ring road (maybe 1st, cant remember). It’s on the south east side of the street on the 2nd floor across the street fro a large book store and open to everyone, if you are just looking for a quiet place to get out of the house. It also has a ton of disgn and diy books if you are into that (I’m obsessed :p).

    Good luck!

I’ve actually never had an issue before. My roommate has lived here 3 years and she doesn’t seem worried about losing the deposit so for now I am going to trust her judgement. At least it’s not much but it would sure be helpful to me right now!

The landlady (who didnt know about our moving plans) randomly decided to raise our rent in the middle of our contract to 1900RMB. This apartment is ok but it’s basically falling apart and not worth that much. So anyway, we are bowing out & letting the greedy biddy find our replacements. Here’s to hoping we get back our deposit.

he hua chi is still around north train station, they just moved a bit further out but just wander around there and you can get lost for days among cheap crap. Keep in mind though that none of it is special, and every shop has the same things. I tried to buy paper for an art project and they had only 2 textures in about 50 colors and that seems to go for every product.
DVDs 7 for movies, tv shows 3.5 per disc so say 14 for a 4 disc season.
sunglasses 25-100 depending on quality. Usually around 30ish.
Dont get spices from a wholesale vendor. Most people have their special flavor, so go to the spice stall at any food market and get as much of anything as you want. I once asked for 2rmb of huajiao a year ago and I’m still using that bag hahaha.

Bunch of English novels 20 each other books 2-5
Speakers 1 small set bought a month ago for 150 now 70
1 set of 2 small speakers and one medium speaker for 100

3 Folding wooden chairs 25 each or 75 for all
Dishes/coffee/tea cups~ random cooking stuff 50 for everything
2 free weights (the kind with the twist lock) currently set to I think 15 & 20 pounds both for 40 (better for women, I think they are not heavy enough for guys or serious lifter but decent for women who want to tone)

Random stuff like mini white board, cork board, paints, a big glass fish bowl, a small glass fish bowl with 9 fish (8 babies and 1 big one!), jewelry, etc for random price
A big fluffy “slipper” shaped like a Koala. it’s like a giant slipper that you put your feet into in the winter. Got it for my cat but she has no interest. 20
a small cat tower with scratching post, a bouncy mouse and a ball to destroy. About 16inches tall. Paid 120. my cat loves this but I will get her a new one there. Looks mostly new (except a somewhat frazzled mouse) 50
Several paintings (come & see) about 32×20 inch ABSTRACT painting yellow and orange “basket” with purple “grapes”, 32×20 inch Blue spiral with gold stars ~300 each
3 small yellow paintings of vegetables (red bell pepper, purple onion with green onion and purple grapes) about 6×6 inch 15 each

Also I’m going to have kittens this week. Tell me if you want one for sure & I will give it to you around July 31st. They should be about 4 weeks old then. I’m taking the mom so please dont ask for her (some jerk was all “I need a cat” I was like dude I’m just selling her TOYS. not cool).

For live music I wouldnt suggest Here We Go… they seem to have DJs but not many bands. Also personally I hate the hotel bands which have like 0 charisma and mostly sing covers. Id recommend you check out jah bar near laonanmendaqiao for live music and to just watch some talented people/hacks jam or join in. Next door is Carols where they frequently host salsa night on tuesday and friday (pretty good mixed drinks too, except the pina colada & mojito. Dont get those). For live music by real bands (vs a “built to order” band in asia) I’d suggest little bar. It’s got a bit of crusty/edgy/hard core/punk music scene which I miss sooo much though I have seen Proximity Butterfly (a local band) simply too many times for one human to accept, but hey it’s better than nothing. Sometimes you can find live musicians playing random music from chinese fultes to jazz on street corners. Near Gaoshengqiao in the Tibetan district there is a trust mart and behind that (near a suining plaza) and next to gaoshengqiaodongjie is a kind of tibetan market where some old guys play pipes and drums to make a kind of funky Asian style flamenco. It’s amazing.
Once in a while there are some music festivals. the last one I enjoyed was “made in Chengdu” and some art shows will also have a music component.

I basically stalk all the music but I can’t play anything. Really miss being able to go to a cheap or free show every night if I wanted to.

@kim I think there is a boy scout troup here in Chengdu. I’m not sure exactly where they meet or under what name but a friend of mine used to be the scout master & take the kids hiking and camping at least once a month so there are definitely some options. You might want to go visit an international school or just harass any other foreign families with school age kids.

Hey I actually need a sofa cuz my idiot cat shat on the last one & we just chucked it. but this one looks too big. what are the measurements? Would you be willing to split it and just sell me the seat part without the chaise lounge? I can give you 400 (if the size is small enough for our living room). I need to replace the one my cat ruined before we move but dont want to spend a ton.

I know near niushikou subway station there is a laundry/dry cleaners. I always see blankets there so I’m sure they can handle a rug. Do you know where the 7-11 is between niuwangmiao & niushikou (forgot that streets name)? It’s next to it.

Oh I’m not gonna buy it, I just thought the concept sounded fun. Callum can attest to the fact that I am a complete moron with anything vaguely technological. I needed his help just to start up my projector.

in reply to: Where to get TEFL Certified? #40738

I’ve been using Dave’s (esl cafe) forum & asked. Seems to be a requirement for public schools because so far every ad I have seen has asked for it (I mean through echinacities & esl cafe, etc). I also learned I cant teach on a student visa there, which rather sucks. Here you can do up to 20 hours a week and the uni will fill out a form.
I’m going to check out the ads you linked to.
OK, So the echinacities one also requests a tesol/tefl or teaching certificate, as does the other one, they just give you a “training” before school starts so the can give it to you themselves. I’m going to apply for that first one though (even though it requests a teaching certificate which I dont have) cuz saving money is never a bad thing. 😛 thanks charlie.

Hmm, how much is a crate? Do I need to tell the airline before or after I buy the ticket?
