Well, I’ve been teaching for 5 years so I thought they would just waive that but apparently it is required by the local government to work in pubic schools there, which sucks. The place offering me a job is apparently one of only 2 companies/agencies (?) allowed to get visas directly so apparently they actually follow the rules. They said I dont need it to work in training schools but the public school jobs are just tooo sweet: ~20 hours (or less) per week, no office hours, apartment (already available, no waiting), visa, and 11K before tax. All the training schools have similar pay & benefits but for 30-40 hours a week.

My friend suggested I just get a fake one but I’m kind of conflicted. The company seems like a good, legit company so I do kind of want to work with them instead of just taking any job that will lie to get me there.

Where would I even get that? The thing is she hasnt had shots so is it legal for her to fly? I dont want to risk it yet. She doesnt have shots cuz literally the exact week we made her vet appointment to get fixed & shots she got pregnant by a romeo who broke into our apartment through the window so I decided to wait until after she had the babies. She still has about 2 weeks to go so I might be able to get her the shots in July if all goes well but this was a sudden decision so I havent really prepared well.

& on that note, would anyone like a kitten towards mid-end of august? I expect 3 & they should be about 6 weeks old by then so safe to wean.

Danny, you rock. That might be the perfect solution cuz I have a ton of books. Do they deliver it right to your house or do you have to pick it up?

I still have the speakers and you can pick them up any time this weekend. Just send me a text when you have time.

Meh, but poly center is a new-ish building in an old area. I think century city will be the new center. They have that giant malls and less than 4 years ago were straight up farms and now it’s full of high rises. The sucky thing is that culture and entertainment havent quite reached there yet, so not that many great restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

I heard from an employee at tag that it was “electrical problems” and they are moving to chunxilu & set to reopen in about 2 weeks. My guess is it’s just code for “too many blatant drug deals and obvious drug use” and that’s why they shut them down. And I am totally behind that. It used to be something people did in secret, now they dont even bother to hide. just because we are foreign doesnt mean we shouldnt have to follow the law (or at least PRETEND to follow it while out in public the SAME WAY WE WOULD BACK HOME).

Whats the addressof this pool? is it that really big one always full of kids in tongzilin?? Is it good for actual swimming or just playing? I need to get back in the habit of swimming daily but I’m not keen to fight kids for room, or accidentally knock any out downing a back stroke.

    Now for an ad:

Result education is a new company with a surprising slant unlike any other education company in Chengdu right now: from the owners, to the assistants, to the management, every member of this company has been foreign educated & has a consistent idea of what a language education should be. Everyone here can speak English, down to the last secretary.

We are a young, energetic, playful & non-traditional company and we are looking for some fun, similarly minded new people to join us.

    We need:
An art or acting teacher (foreign or Chinese)
A dance or music teacher (Foreign or Chinese)
A sports/physical fitness teacher with experience in teamwork training (Foreign)
4 Foreign teachers (playful, expressive, enthusiastic, physically animated, caring, clear accents, race is not an issue but accent is~ yes we will consider foreign born/raised Chinese for this. Must have at least 1 year experience specific to kids.)
4 Chinese teachers (clear intonation & pronunciation, animated, flexible, outgoing, patient, expressive and cheerful. Must have at least 1 year experience specific to kids.)
4 Assistants (Chinese or foreign high school or university students who wants to make friends, gain work experience, etc. Work includes helping students, translating, making copies, running errands, making sure no students fight or get hurt, playing with kids. Monday-Friday 9-4 with 1 hour lunch break. Pay is 500 per week, 2 week job).

These are for a summer camp we are hosting June 30-July 13. It will be in century city and we will have a bus to pick everyone up at the subway station at 8:30 & deliver them to the school. Camp runs 2 weeks, monday-friday 9am-4pm. Pay varies (depending on your skills and how many classes you can teach) but is at or above local average.

I want to vouch for A-one school!

I worked there for about 6 weeks. The fact is they hired a shitty agency (golden bridge) that did not want to pay the teacher (me! and I’m guessing they are still having problems and might have lost money on that deal if they posted an ad here).
The school itself is awesome and the teachers are really nice (& not that fake friendly either, genuinely nice). The kindergarten is like heaven on earth, a magical land of DIY toys and adorable dancing toddlers. The cafeteria food is greeeeat. It’s about 27 classes per week and like 12 of those are 10 minutes long pre-k classes.
I left the school because the agency didn’t want to pay me as they agreed and because they never did as promised. I really struggled about it for a while because the school/people are so nice but the agency sucks soooo much. I can’t work for them now (plus I’m sure they are annoyed at me cuz of how I chose to handle the agency so they wouldnt give me visa trouble) but this is really nice job for someone who really likes kids/teaching and wants to learn chinese. Oh and the director has lived in Canada for a decade and is super young, so you wont feel as “odd man out” being the only foreigner. One drawback is it is quite far, right next to the airport, but only 30-45 minutes by bus 1st ring road & gaoshengqiao.

Anyway, they are good people and deserve a good teacher, so I hope someone can respond to them and they dont have to go through another shitty agency. 😀

Finding a job here is better and frankly, fairly easy. the only reasons I can think of for you not already having an offer is 1. Timing (late december/early february is best for the next semester, july/august for fall term) 2. you’re black (depending on the school/location that can be a deal breaker though it is easier if you are american and have lighter skin tone. In Chengdu public school and entertainment seem to be the easiest gig for black people. Sometimes they can get jobs at training schools if there is a good relationship) 3. You’re old/boring (same problem. they want us active and out going. Old/boring people dont last long working with kids) 4.You’re super ugly (seems fairly common if you take into account how hot the average teachers here are (not including uni teachers). We are walking advertisements, training schools will use your image to sell the school. If your image sucks, the school wont sell. it’s just that simple.

But anyway, all of those things can be gotten around, you just need to be here and develop your contacts. Good relationships are thekey to jobs in China and the longer you are here the better your job prospects will get.

What’s your work? Just list your hobbies and interests or something so people know what you are into.

I’m kind of in the mood to start meeting more new people when I get back to Chengdu. There used to be an awesome weekly couchsurfing meeting that was great for meeting foreigners and locals to hang out and have dinner with but I havent found anything like that for a while. It’d be nice to find new and more social friends.
