WoodWERDParticipant
Interested but won’t be back in town for another week. I’ll send you a message when I get back, assuming you still have it.
WoodWERDParticipantPoly Center area off Kehua Lu has more laid back bars. But go here for more:
WoodWERDParticipantI’m one of those people who secured a contract/visa before moving. It wasn’t the best job, but with a little diligence and common sense you can avoid becoming a horror story. Some common advice (for uni jobs) you’ll hear on ESL forums is to narrow down the places you’re interested in, and then head to the city’s wiki page. They tend to list most of the major universities in the city. From there you can jump to the uni website and look for contact people in the Foreign Language Dept and start blasting emails. It’s not the most efficient way obviously, but it’s a start if you’re not in a position to apply in person.
Otherwise there are plenty of ESL oriented job sites out there for you to reply to ads directly. They’ve faded from memory a bit, but try Dave’s ESL, abroadchina, seriousteacher, echinacities. Like Chris said, do your research and you’ll be fine.
WoodWERDParticipantSquirrel was right, it’s a university town that was waiting to fill in. I made it down to Kunming but didn’t bother going out there.
WoodWERDParticipantIf I weren’t headed out of town tomorrow I’d be happy to talk with you…but I’ll give your thread a bump at least! Plenty of people here will answer your questions if you want to post them.
WoodWERDParticipantGood times…the fireworks were awesome! Many thanks to the Dojo crew.
WoodWERDParticipantCharlie/Ray if you see this, mind posting a link to these mesh filters you’re describing?
WoodWERDParticipantThanks a lot, will do.
WoodWERDParticipantSo one of my fans bit the bullet yesterday after about 4 months. I usually left it running (low) during the day unless I knew I was going to be gone 8+ hours. I took it apart and didn’t get very far w/o tools, but I can tell there’s still power going to the motor so it may be salvageable. Guess I’ll touch base through taobao and see if they’ll help me out…I was planning to buy new filters before I left at the end of the month too :\
WoodWERDParticipantIs this going on rain or shine?
WoodWERDParticipantIs there way to just filter men’s shoes by size on Taobao? I was looking around yesterday and couldn’t seem to find an option for that.
WoodWERDParticipantGiving this one more bump before I decide whether to try to make this happen. And thanks goatboy, I was not aware of Xipu.
WoodWERDParticipantFirst time spotting cottage cheese today! Unfortunately it came with 33% of your daily sodium intake if I’m reading labels correctly. 19.50 for 100-150g @ Metro 😐
Thanks for some of those tips Kim!
WoodWERDParticipantI used chinaflower214.com to send some a few months ago while I was in Vietnam. Had no problems ordering online, can’t comment on their phone support.
WoodWERDParticipantWow…
WoodWERDParticipantOle supermarket is the closest I’ve found to a Whole Foods (US) type place. It’s at the Mix C center on 2nd ring. Prices get pretty high for organic stuff, but worth checking out.
WoodWERDParticipantI wouldn’t say it’s unusual to sign another contract when you get here. Were the terms different or was it just the missing signatures? Who knows what happened to the one they gave you/you sent them, but not really important unless they’re blatantly changing things. Chances are it was simply lost or misplaced, but it sounds like there may be other red flags here. I believe they have to give the PSB the signed/counter signed contract when they apply for your visa, so I’d say that’s the bigger question as mentioned above.
WoodWERDParticipantAnybody else living in Longquanyi? I did see another Lowai once we both just looked at each other confused.
That may have been me haha…I was out in Tonganzhen until last summer. Can’t say I miss it that much, but I should’ve bought a bike when I was out there instead of renting crappy ones.
WoodWERDParticipantThis is amazing, thanks for sharing. Took less than 30 seconds to burst into laughter. Then it just gets wacky/sad…really well shot though. If anyone needs me to rep their international city of the future, give my agent a shot via my pm box.
WoodWERDParticipantI haven’t lived in Wenjiang but I was on the opposite side of town (Longquanyi area) for my first contract and moved into the city last summer. Night and day difference for me, in a good way. If you’re interested in hearing more general comparisons of ‘rural vs. urban’ Chengdu let me know.
