How long did you end up staying in Bangkok? Did the protests affect your getting around the city at all? I’m going to spend a little over a month in Thailand, but I think I’m just going to be flexible and see where the winds take me. I’ll be traveling solo, so if anyone wants to hang out with a Texan over the break give me a shout!

Nah let them spam all they want. Its funny how they kick 90% of teachers that they interview no matter their qualification and then cry here every day with their job posts :)

Sounds like you’ve got some experience there? Is I2 known for high turnover? There were a couple people saying good things a couple pages back but it got buried pretty quick.

Things turned violent yesterday….2 dead. Seems like it’d be wise to steer clear of any government buildings. This article has some mapped out:

Please post about your experience when you get back! Think I’m going to check out Thailand for a few weeks over the Spring Festival.

Wow, KPI’s in a language mill? I guess it doesn’t surprise me given the nature of the business, but I’d be interested to see their model!

I need to check out the on-campus massage place out here. Is there a pinyin translation for deep-tissue or something similar?

Dave’s ESL was getting dominated by CTFU spam for awhile. I’m guessing there will be a lot of new nicknames popping up on this forum soon to try to generate hits for their site.

I opened an account a few weeks ago and almost got my hopes up once they confirmed I had online access and gave me my little USB dongle. Then I got home and found the site is entirely in Chinese and Google Translate doesn’t work because the site is imaged based (?) haha. DOH!

If my post is too much of a derailment please let me know and I’ll delete/start a new thread. But how realistic is it for an American to find a corporate-type job in Chengdu without being able to speak Mandarin? I have a bachelor’s degree and ~10 years work experience in the mortgage/banking industry. I do plan to make one of these events eventually!

A+++ trolling, would read again. Became pretty apparent at “for realz” / “plz” / etc. If you need to vent about an exchange between a foreigner and a bus boy then you probably have bigger problems in life. Try harder and suck less, Lawrence.

I went out to Luodai with a few students today and it was kind of a trip seeing the various characters hiking the mini great wall. I was the white dude sweating his ass off in shorts and a t-shirt, while all these guys/girls were practically in dress clothes.

The little ancient town would’ve been cool to get some pictures of, but it was too rainy when we got there. I did snap a couple shots of scorpions and beetles on a stick though. All in all I’d give it a 6/10…little heavy on the tourist junk at both sites.

Sorry, 80. Thanks for the suggestions…as long as I’ve got a room to myself and it’s not a total dump I’ll be fine.

I just flew in last night and would like to try to make it out. Currently living in Tong’an so I don’t know if I’ll be comfortable getting to/from Chengdu by then…would be cool to meet some of you guys though!

Thanks for the advice Kim! If I can find some kind of sports club out in those parts I’d be content…and I definitely think the distance from the city will force me to improve my non-existent Chinese skills 😉  The school has been pretty slow to provide updates (work permit has been ‘in process’ since 8/20), so hopefully they’re not just leading me on.

Just for conversation’s sake, I have not been asked for a CRC and the school claims my work permit should be done any day now. But the way things have gone so far, it would not surprise me in the least if the next email from the school says they now need a background check in order to get the permit approved.

It takes around 6 weeks to obtain one direct from the FBI (I needed one for Korea), but other expat forums have said that a authenticated letter from your local county is sufficient for China. Don’t take my word for it though, I’m a first timer who hasn’t even made it over yet.
