One of the producers of this show just ended his 5 year run as lead producer/writer of True Blood so it probably will be a good show. I personally haven’t gone to the movies in years and could care less given the incredible tv content out there (Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Spartacus, Sons of Anarchy, Warehouse 13, Fringe…this list could go on and on).

@rick. that search should work as most stores selling normal curtains should also have. Anyway, not sure of your experiences on taobao but (regardless of what i am ordering) i will normally im the store (or call them) and chat with them to get a sense as to whether they are real. In this case i can recall describing the curtains as “curtains 5 star hotels use that keep the cold out” and may have additionally called them “blackout” curtains which is a name used in the U.S. Most of these stores are in gzhou but can crank these out to your door in about a week. I would recommend ordering for your smallest window first and ask them to throw in swatches of all the available colors so you can go all in on the 2nd order. Yeah, normally they also arrive already replete with hooks so u just hang them.

    My two cents…

Invest in some wool undergarments – I myself absolutely hate using these because of the bulk but on those really cold days it makes all the difference in the world as you just don’t feel cold.

Buy thermal pajamas – Go to one of those little clothing shops and buy pajamas. Those things are made from some synthetic blend that makes them INCREDIBLY warm yet comfortable to the skin. I swear these things are warmer than the wool long johns I brought here. As for the clothing shop that sells these…? Each and every street has one of these shops… they sell bright colored/flowered bathing suits in the summer and then boots and long pajamas in the winter…you know the one I mean.

Seal out draft – Go to B&Q (the British version of Home Depot – one store is in the south on hangkong road near kehua road) and snag some of those self-adhesive rubber strips that are used to insulate both door and window jams. These things are easy to use; you just cut the length you need, peel back the paper to expose the adhesive part and then place in the desired location. I did all of my windows and even my front door and not a draft anywhere.

Finally, snag some thermal curtains off taobao. A lot of hotels use these as they act almost like a blanket over the window. We have two curtain tracks along all of our windows: one for drape, the other for the sheer – during winter, we just remove the sheer and replace with these bad boys.

We have central heat/ac in our home but really prefer to keep the thermostat lower to avoid the effects of air heating (dry sinus, sore throat, etc.). After doing all of the above this winter has been bearable.

    Cheers,

Rick, A couple of points i missed.

    – Re: Nestle Whipping Cream – My wife informs me that the package actually says it has 35.5g of fat (which will work).

    – Any Whipping Cream will also work for this purpose but the consistency will be lighter (some recipes on the web propose resolving this by adding some powdered milk and/or yogurt to thicken it up – both of which sound reasonable).

    no problem Rick.

Actually, you were correct in your assumption of there existing a difference between whipping cream and heavy cream because usually there is (whipping cream usually is only 30g of fat – slightly lighter and thus results in a lighter consistency). Just be sure to read the label and if it’s 36g or more, you are good to go.

Btw, be sure that you chill that cream in the fridge first and after souring it you may want to put back in fridge a little bit longer…also may require more than the 1 tbspn of lemon juice but just use trial and error and you will have it. good luck!

Rick, I have usually found this in the non-refrigerated section of the supermarket (for example in the carrefour on the east side i found in the “foreign foods section”) but have also found it in the refrigerated section at Ito (nearby the cheeses). Yes, you are correct in that it is usually sold in a large size that resembles any brand of milk (the rectangular carton).

The Nestle brand actually makes a mini-cartons (i called them packets – also rectangular-shaped like the regular milk carton but much smaller, almost to resemble those little cartons you just punch the straw through and drink). Note that Nestle packages this as “Whipping Cream” but it doesn’t matter as the fat content is identical to “heavy cream” (at least 36g fat). Look for the light blue package with bold blue on the face.

fyi to all – sour cream can be easily made by just adding a tbspn of lemon or lime juice to a cup of heavy cream and letting stand about 10 minutes or so. i do it all the time and it tastes great.

Heavy cream can be found at any of the supermarkets – carrefour, ito, auchan. Ito actually sells it in little packs so no need to buy the large size.

Note that you can also mix heavy cream with milk to create “half and half” for your coffee…i really hope i don’t have to specify in what proportions to mix this. 🙂

i am not one to recommend behaving in any uncivilized manner towards our fellow man (and forgive me for the following ungentlemanly words) but the audacity of that little @$%*ole to make that comment has my irish up…and i’m not even irish!!!

cretins like that usually sleep late into the day. accordingly each and every AM, i would be the nosiest m’fer that dorm has ever seen. i would make phone calls screaming into my cell, slam anything that closes, crank up my computer and play tunes, sing along with those tunes, whistle…i might even consider eating beans every night before sleeping. Can you say “roommate from hell?”

if you are not in a rush (which i inferred from your post that you are not) then my advice would be to nab a few suits the next time you find yourself in (or traveling through) hk; you cannot go wrong.

Hi @Charlie, Grappa is in the Galleria shopping mall which is located next to the Auchan shopping complex (just inside the south third ring road); i believe it is on the 4th floor (?), anyway i am sure that it is located one level above the Peter’s restaurant that is also located there. This restaurant is part of a hk group that has several locations – probably the most popular being in the Pacific Place shopping mall in hk. Cheers.

I second @JerryS and will try it as well but please realize that saying “better than Mandolino’s at least” does not inspire a lot of confidence; you might want to work on your closing technique. 🙂

I also ate at this establishment and would rate the pizza as “mediocre” (slightly better than Peter’s and Grandma’s ONLY because of the brick oven crust).

IMO, the top restaurants for pizza (in order) would be: Grappa’s, Peter Pan followed by Le Sud (french interpretation but still tasty)…while the next rung of restaurants would include Del Mar and maybe this place. For the record, Grappa’s absolutely destroys anything in Chengdu; pizza is tasty, pasta dishes are tasty, bread delivered to your table with olive oil, clean…the only negative is their bad location in the south.
