    I gotta agree with Tall Dave here. Even more so, because even if they did ‘just discover’ this document, they would not have released it if it was not in their interest to release it. There is no FOIA in China and this wasn’t some sort of wikileaks. No bureaucrat would just find it and release it on his own, he’d be executed. No, this was a “18nth national congress is over, political transition is over, oh shit do we really want to be in a game of chicken with the US and Japan? Guess not” leak. I’m sure there will be another fabricated distraction for the next one, or the next time the economy is looking like it’s in trouble.

    Your last image is a product of photoshop. Only the 5 boats in the front are real. Whoever did it knows decent PS, but doesn’t know perspective well, the boats in the far background don’t shrink fast enough compared to the distance to the horizon.

    FYI, the ‘1000 fishing vessels’ from China didn’t bother to show up. I’m sure that’s one fact that won’t get reported in China.

    The couch surfing group is meeting tonight.

    On Sunday, the board game bar we went to was actually this one –

    The map is a little off, it’s across the bridge and in a residential-looking appartment building. I wouldn’t have found it without the help of coworkers.

    20RMB per person, dunno if it matters how long you stay. Space was ok, though felt disorganized and messy. Board game selection was maybe 30-40 games, a few duplicates, many still in shrink wrap, all in Chinese (knock offs). The drinks are awful nasty koolaid– sorts of affairs.

    I’m sure better options exist.

    Anyone going to join me at the group from couch surf? I don’t want to abandon interested parties, but I think joining up with them will be best, the more than merrier right? I’ll at least post how it went after.

    Actually, the name “Master” was offensive. My place is 5k. And I wouldn’t call what I’m getting for 5k there luxurious, but I realize I’m living according to western and not Chinese standards. I choose the place because of A: Proximity to the metro (no orange lamborghini for me) and B: Because my housing agent sold me a bad bill of goods.

    I’m actually thinking of moving down to Swan Lake, near the Software park. Same sort of place, 3k a month in stead, according to a friend who moved there recently.

    I am just trashing Master because I honestly don’t like the building, and the whole “shutting shit off with no notice” is not something a prospective tenant will find out about until too late otherwise. I did not mean to come off as “rich” – I tend to live under my means, if anything. I don’t bother with an Ayi because I don’t like the idea of having a servant, and I save 50% of my salary because I’d rather have the luxury of peace of mind than the luxury of more material wealth.

    Yeah, I agree, having a war now is an incredibly bad idea for both parties. China has no functional way to even prosecute a war,, its navy is incredibly outgunned and it can’t invade anyone with its massive army. It can only launch missiles, which would hopefully be non-nuclear.

    All China really wanted out of this rabble rousing was A: The distraction from other events and B: The bargaining chip of all the ravening hordes demanding blood to use at the table when they sit down and talk this out with the Japanese. I’m sure the political calculus for them was an easy win-win there, since all that hatred becomes externally focused.

    Yeah I saw that article, I’m actually going to check out the board game bar they mention there on Sunday. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    @Charlie

    Yeah I just learned how to place Chinese chess not too long ago. I liked it, but less so than I like Japanese chess(Shogi).

    @iameric

    Do you own any of those? I’ve played Gloom before, it was ok. The gimmick with the transparent cards is better than the game.

    I replied to someone on go chengdu, but I didn’t initiate. I also tried to contact the magazine after they did their board game issue.

    @all

    I’m going to try out the board game bar mentioned in gochengdu, see if it’s nice there. Otherwise, any ideas on venues? Do any of you have games to bring? I have carcasonne with me. I could play after work next week some time, then I’m out of chengdu for a few weeks.

    Taiwan doesn’t even have 100 naval vessels, much less anything you’d call a ‘missile cruiser’. Wikipedia does claim they have about 50 missile boats and site reputable sources. But a missile boat is hardly a real naval vessel – the ones ROC has don’t even mount their own radar, instead depending on other sources to find their targets. Basically they’re disposable missile carriers with no defensive capabilities of their own, and are the equivalent of suicide dive bombers.

    Only go to master if you like having your power/gas/water shut off without warning every couple of weeks. And shitty China Unicom internet. (ok, just shittier than China Telecom, they’re all shit) Can’t wait to get out of this place.

    Thanks Charlie! I work down there, that’d be super convenient, but I prefer to work out late (yeah I know, I’m odd)

    Is QSL that place in the A section of the software park, or someplace else? I heard it was pretty crowded there? Do you know what their hours are?

    @Brendan: Given how stage managed these protests are, and the fact that they were deliberately created to distract the Chinese from other topics like the power transition and the economic slowdown, I think this is the last place you should look for real social change.

    Is the mandarin club What’s the lesson organization like? I’ve been taking lessons at my company, have about a year of ‘1 hour a week’, which adds up to close to nothing when to comes to Chinese. 🙂

    Is this map correct btw? I thought it was close to tongzilin train station
