That’s the day she has chosen, if it goes well she will be back though. Alternatively you could have your measurements taken elsewhere or by a friend and I could pass them on.I think she has a measuring guide of some kind.

Great to see lots of interest. I’ll try to find out prices/choices etc and let you guys know. For the moment if anyone else is interested leave a message so I can get a rough idea of demand.

@Erik – Will definitely be cheaper and the quality would be decent, but I’m not sure if anything beats a good tailor in the west!

@Charlie – More a friend of a friend! She has mentioned shirts and suits, I’ll ask if they do jackets etc. They seem to have a pretty decent reputation in BJ so would awesome if they can come!

@Nick – I’ll try to find out soon, what kind of range is suitable do you think?

@Chris – That sounds incredibly cheap! How was the quality? From what I’ve seen and heard, I don’t think it will be quite that cheap!

Awesome site, thanks for sharing. Have been putting off doing the HSK for a while now, but the HSK course for level 5 looks like it will help me refresh and fill in any vocab gaps. Super convenient!

There’s a charity called Hopeful Hearts which raises money to pay for heart operations for poor kids with heart conditions. I know the Dutch lady who is responsible for the Chengdu branch if you’re interested.

Not sure about food donations, but there’s bound to be some chrities of that type around. Maybe some NGOs too.

I think Galleria Mall has some kind of jungle gym for small kids. Also there is a bowling centre on kehua beilu, maybe the kids are too small for that though.

My impression is that most foreigners and attractions for foreigners are in the South.

The East is mainly ‘old’ common chengdu folks ‘本地人’ whose grandparents are from Chengdu too (Fewer than you’d think). For some reason every taxi driver seems to live in the East too, try asking next time you take a cab!

Although area around the East Music Park does seem to be getting pretty trendy with young people, and its definitely cheaper than the South Central area too.

I’ve never had a full deposit back in cash in China, but you can use it to pay off any outstanding bills etc. So the best thing is to leave the last few months of Management fee (物管费) and any utilities which you can get away without paying (without being cut off) until the very end. Then you can just tell the landlord to use the deposit to pay for these things.

I had one apartment where the outstanding Management fee was actually larger than the deposit, so I just paid the extra and all was good.

Interesting that they would charge a higher deposit for foreigners. I’d like to know what kind of terrible habits this landlord thinks laowais have that command an extra deposit!

Hi Federico, Good luck with the hostel! Shame you opened after one of the busiest weeks of the year! Here are some ideas off the top mf my head:

 Set up a page on hostelworld.com, hostels.com etc so travelers will find your place, should help keep the flow of customers a little more steady.

 Add the map and also add how to get there from train/bus stations and the airport. Address in Chinese would be good too for taxis.

 Open your balcony for weekly events. E.g. Open mic night/live music. Good way to get known to locals and expats.

 Italian food! Maybe you could even offer some kind of Chinese/Italian fusion breakfast or something. Oh, and coffee!

 Maybe set up some promotions with Gochengdoo, Chengduliving, Hello Chengdu etc to get your name out there!

You’ve probably thought of most of these already, but just to encourage you! 加油!

Good luck with registering, but to be honest if you don’t understand Chinese, then you’re probably not going to enjoy using weibo that much! Good study resource though! 🙂

Go to the China Mobile shop and try to find out what tariff you are on. As standard most sim cards have a very low data allowance and then charged at 0.01yuan/kb for further data use, which is very expensive.

You can change the tarrif you use to include data and a fixed amount will be taken off your phone credit at the beginning of every month. For example I have a 50Yuan/month data plan which gives me 500MB (about 0.000097yuan/KB!!) I also have a 20 yuan package which gives me something like 300 sms and some minutes too. So at the beginning of every month I need to remember to top up at least 70yuan when this payment is deducted.

The tariff you are on is easy to change at any China Mobile shop, but beware that usually the new tariff isn’t effective until the following month… so watch out for the ridiculously high default charges! Like many monopoly businesses (China Mobile, Telecom etc) in China, China mobile will quite happily rip-off people for something they don’t know about!

Let me know if you need help!
