Great question and I don’t like a lot of stuff but end up adding little touches to make home away from home, I am with Charlie on decluttering the apartment.

    1) My first place was a basic studio and it was habitable albeit I had to scrub it every week as I was paranoid about cockroaches/rats due to neighbours leaving rubbish out in the hallways. My second apartment (which was the 40th place I saw) had good furniture, nice interior but as it was brand new there was a lot of debri, smell of paint etc.. so I bought a mammoth load of cleaning products and proper brooms, Dettol, brushes from markets.

    2) A sound system as I love blasting music.

    3) Kitchen utensils/small applicances which I would normally have in the kitchen such as a toaster.

    4) I put up a lot of pictures/art work from family and friends it was a nice reminder whenever I felt a little homesick.

    5) Tools to fix things as despite living in a new build something always went wrong and nothing a wrench couldn’t fix besides better to attempt things than be conned.
Funny story I told my greedy landlord there was a leak in the shower faucet which was dripping non stop and it needed fixing, he urged me not to touch it as he knew what to do. He came over with his wife, they assessed the situation, called someone and said a ‘worker’ can come tomorrow but you need to pay 300 RMB as you are living here. I didn’t utter a word, although in my head was cussing them out, (300 RMB do you know how many beers I can buy with that) so I took my wrench out from the kitchen and thought maybe I can try this and see what happens. The landlord nearly passed out when he saw me and they both started saying ‘no no no touch’, I took a bolt off the faucet tightened something, put PTFE around it, put the bolt back on and bingo the leak stopped, 300 my behind!! They laughed uncomfortably, said very good and left. I did a happy dance as they went away, so the moral of the story is buy tools or a tool kit, they come in use for something everyday.

Hey Brad I will ask some of my friends if they know the answer to your query and Merior made a really good point, see which bus numbers stop in your area. I remember when I first moved to China, had absolutely no idea about anything let alone public transport and this was before the birth of APP’s.

With a bag full of 1 Yuan notes, I spent many weekends jumping on and off random buses and exploring various streets, I figured things out eventually and it was quite the adventure.

That is not a good situation to be in and I feel for you. A couple of questions for you, how did you lose you job? How much money do you need? What kind of bills do you need to pay?
Is there a way you could negotiate your wages from you new job, ask for extra shifts and stop the eviction from your apartment as I am pretty sure you can sort this out.

You want ‘anyone to lend you some money’ but I am concerned you have mounting bills, if you are evited then a substantial deposit to a new apartment needs to be given then how and when will you be able to pay back the ‘loan’ by the end of the month?

On a positive note you stated ‘you have nothing’ but ‘have a new job, access to the internet and roof over your head’ which is better than ‘nothing’.

In terms of Chinese brands I have purchased a lot of clothing items and footwear by Anta, Li-Ning and Erke and liked what I have bought. I did have to visit several stores to find something which I really liked so if your up for a day of exploring then give it a shot.
However personally taste wise Uniqlo and Muji are my favourites as they don’t have stuff that has been regurgitated on by shiny diamonds, bling-bling, cartoons or Chinglish.

Carl, don’t you know that in the tangled web of the internet nothing is ever deleted, it stays forever 🙂 Besides even if you hide this from her someone will definitely show ‘the wanted girl’ your research methods.
To end on a positive best of luck with project ‘If anyone knows this girl, please tell me” 🙂

Agree with Taobao and Metro being checked out for your Indian culinary needs. Try some of the markets near the universities especially close to Huaxi campus as there are a number of south Asian students residing in that area who seem to buy a lot of spices etc.. from the markets near their campuses (get off at Huaxiba subway stop). There was a Indian restaurant called ‘Paradise’ near Huaxi campus and the cook was from India, but I am not entirely sure if it’s still there because they obviously got there supplies from somewhere.
If I hear of anyone or any place that can hit you up then I will let you know.

Hey LongWang, I don’t believe Charlie is “palming the website list on anyone” after stating “check out some of the spots on Chengduplaces”, he is merely suggesting that forum members who are looking for advice check out Chengduplaces, you are free to research yourself.

It is time consuming to keep websites current and constantly updating them as you know nothing is set in stone things change on a daily basis.
So what would be a useful idea is to inform the moderators with helpful hints to add to the website or PM posters with your own advice.
This would be to anyone that if you know of places which have closed down or are worth mentioning then inform the moderators I am sure it will be appreciated.

Definitely creepy as heck, talk about stalking her sorry Carl can’t help you out. But if by some chance I do see or hear of her then I will tell her to run as fast as she can (joking) will let her know that she is a wanted woman by Carl who has her photo on his phone, searched various social media websites and is pleading on an expat website to locate her and also has her face as his icon on ChengduLiving.

But then again I could be very wrong and this may be the beginning of a budding romance.

    Hey everyone,

I would be slightly cautious about Best Box a few years I did read something about something similar to BBox being a scam and I am not saying BBox is but still be wary. When I first arrived (stupid newbie) I had a IPTV deal via my internet provider and it was a waste of money, poor connection, channels freezing etc, I was charged for each time a “professional” came out to fix any connection issues, I go red with rage now when I think back about it.

Beat Box you might be perfectly legit and if so that is great but still we have to be wary as there are so many who are not.

Forgot to mention that Sabrina’s might be a costly suggestion or Paradise Indian take-away near the university campus might be an option although I am not 100 per cent sure if it is still open.

Hi I have seen various Indian/Thai products in Carrefour in Tongziling and Auchan check the import/export aisle. I would suggest checking out the markets near Sichuan university campus as a few of my friends found Indian products randomly placed in the market but be prepared to spend a bit of time looking for them it could be a hit and miss situation.

    Best of luck

Check his channel out but be warned you will be hungry and his Chinese is awesome!!

Agree with Vincent and Charlie great post, I now have the urge to smash in my friends phones just so they can buy the ones you are selling. (I wouldn’t smash my own as I just bought a new one although now regret it after looking at your offer but need to resist as I also have several back up phones)

Good luck Chris and if I smash in a phone sorry scrap that if I know of anyone who needs a phone then I will send them in your direction.
