In honor of the occasion, Natooke will be selling post apocalypse fixed gear paddle boats. Fully encased, solar cells on the roof, bags of fertile dirt for growing the included miscellaneous vegetable seed. The steel is imported from Italy so you know it will stand up to punishment!

Fede: I’ll have to take you up on that offer. But for an on the fly cup of 美式咖啡 that tastes authentic I’ll still swing by 85c

Unfortunately the man in shorts was not me. My red bicycle recently bit the dust. May she rest in peace. You’ll see me riding wheelies on a blue bicycle these days.

Whoa. Surprised this place isn’t already known by most everyone. They got a good donut. Decent bread. And for 8 kuai a killer cup of coffee. Brewed coffee for a third the cost you’ll find anywhere.

Had some folks asking about whether or not polo was still on. The answer:

Yes. You will still find us at the Sichuan Gymnasium’s north side.

Saturday (today) at 4 p.m. (just shy an hour from now).

We have all the equipment you need (mallets and balls).

Additionally, we’re always open to a new court. Although the gymnasium space suits, it’s prone to random pup-tent markets and other random, play-prohibiting activities.

If you know a space, preferably between 10-20m by 30-40m (enclosed with a curb, or retaining wall is a huuuuuge plus but not absolutely necessary) within the second ring road then we’re interested. Hell within the 3rd if you think the spot is especially suitable to what I’ve described. (For space think skating rink, indoor soccer court, or similar)

    See you there!

We’re expecting extra filters to arrive within about 5 days. They come in two packs.

Got up and looked outside, dreaded the look of thing but figured I wouldn’t let it damper my plans. Did a good 60km with the mask and afterwards felt fresh. It took me a year to figure it out, but yes this kind of pollution does have a noticeable impact on your breathing.

    Please take care!

Eh. Out toward 青城山 it was hazy and grey and drizzly. On the train back the haze went beige in color the further into the city we got.

In other news it also feels warmer in the city even though the temperature reads the same!

I basically feel the same way as you. Obama is obviously an incredibly brilliant and charismatic person. He’s controlled by corporate interests though, like every other president since JFK. The military industrial complex, the prison complex, the drug war, the pharmaceutical industry, etc. We’ll see what happens in his second term but I have low expectations.

Ditto. I listened to the victory speech and foremost felt angry. Being detached from the fervor of the political process, the speech just sounded like bland rhetoric: increase volume, thank something that everyone values, crack joke, cue laughter, reflective pause, troops, pause, unity, increase volume, America’s great, troops, louder, America’s super fuckin’ great.

    How can people buy this?

My expectations: increased militarization in the Pacific arena and not a single nod to those of us that live our lives out as genuine diplomats for the beloved Motherland.

    Look us up:

    Natooke成都

For us it’s been a great resource for reaching folks about events, rides, etc.

It’s a bit much to wrap your head around to start, but if you start following the right folks it gives you a real good idea what’s going on. And it’s a useful language learning tool!

The China Air Quality app has been a huge motivator for me recently in deciding whether or not to wear the mask. Depending on humidity, cloud cover, wind, and any number of factors the pollution here sometimes appears less severe than in reality.

Cycling for me is a primary form of exercise and I got tired of feeling like hell (short of breath, coughing, general malaise) after spinning around for a few hours. Most often I’d convince myself it looked fairly clear out and just scoff at donning the mask but with the app and the simple label “Unhealthy” I need to take precautions.

Chengdu’s pollution is also unusual. Unlike a lot of other infamous places (the whole NE of China, in particular Beijing), the pollution here just seems to stick around. It’s occasionally awful and rarely perfectly clear, but it’s there. Beijing you could hold out for the times you knew would clear up and be perfectly clean, but here you can’t time it like that.

My advice is if you do any marginally strenuous exercise outside for any period of time greater than a half hour regularly, use form of sanctioned protection. Sure you breath this stuff in most of the time anyway (unless you happen to work in a pressurized filtrated laboratory), but the time its really detrimental is when you’re exerting your lungs. Be safe!

Currently no extra filters. We can get them in next week, however.

The mask is rated for a month’s use if used quite regularly. If pollution levels remain high and you’re using it several hours daily, you may need to change it more often.

If you have a mask, gauging it’s particle saturation by looking at the inside of the mask is often tough as dirt and contaminants rub off your face. You should remove the filter and check to see the general coloration. If you need to wash it, wash the mask only. Do not wash the filter as it affects its efficacy.

All the masks we sell come with a more comprehensive filter with charcoal activation to filter not only particulates as small as 2.5, but also harmful chemicals and molecules (CO, CO2, SO2, Methane, etc.)

Construction is a huge contributor to pollution levels, as the energy required for building far exceeds normal usage. China is by a large margin the largest consumer of coal and that’s a large reason why we deal with pollution on this scale. Add to it Chengdu’s location (in a giant bowl) and it’s density and you have a perfect concoction for awful air quality.

I hear tomorrow a front might come through which usually cleans things up!

Sorry to dig this up, but as I just got an alert on my phone for the pollution level I figured I’d give an update.

The full line of Respro masks (City, Techno and Sportsa) have hit the shelves. Colors, sizes, you name it.

Did a big day on the bike yesterday (out to Longquan, climbed the pass and back), and rocked mine the whole way. I’ve got to admit, even in Beijing I never wore my mask all too often, but the difference is palpable. Normal feeling lungs vs. the usual feeling of congestion most closely akin to a lingering pneumonia.

Even today just sitting around I feel worse than I did after a days worth of heavy breathing through the thing.

Lucy, no sweat. We’ll be doing plenty of activities like this. You’re bound to catch one sooner or later.

Volunteers all taken care of. Again, if anyone wants something to do they can always hang out at the start and follow us on to the finish. You never know, extra numbers always helps!

Super excited about this. See you in just a few hours!

How long do you plan to live in Chengdu?

We plan to be here a long time and have many an alleycat!

Also, do you play bicycle polo?

    Few things to mention:

Must be above 18 years of age.

    Must obey traffic laws.

Safety first. We hope you wear a helmet and see to it your equipment is functioning properly. This is not a requirement however.

    Have fun.

Each checkpoint should be manned by two people. Anything goes, but please be courteous to our volunteers.

All other race information including the map, checkpoints and how the race will be run will remain secret until after registration.

Smart idea! Super excited about this. Should be a kickoff for the whole evening of madness.

Also, forgot to mention, any style of bike is welcome. This isn’t just some cool fixie meetup.

I’ve heard people saying we might break the 100 person mark. That many people on bikes is bound to be a hoot.

Made the mistake today of doing a 60k ride without it. Figured it wasn’t too bad. Quickly realized it was wishful thinking. It’s amazing the stuff you cough up afterwards.

Then the amazement wears off and I usually just feel like an ass.
