    @Tracy: dont be!

    there are so many foreigners in china now diligently in hunts for all kinds of chinese treasures like this yet many chinese simply turn blind eyes on them.

    @Charlie: there are simply too many “weird things” in china.

    pretty or ugly, it is in the eyes of the beholder.

    unfortunately, it was a way people smoked in old china, 水烟, smoking through water; or simply enjoying nicotine disolved in water.

    @Tracy: don’t take me wrong, dear. it is not trying to “prove” anything but a chance for people to improve and/or sharpen their “translation” skills. with so many people with great language skills in CD, why don’t we provide them with a place they can showcase their talents? with some monetary incentive or cooperative credits, it would be much more interesting, don’t you think?

    @Sascha: an ebook is a marvelous idea, maybe a coffee table edition as well? i’m all for it.

    @Sascha: if the contents are not that proprietary, maybe we could have a contest here, see who can provide with the best translation.

    may the best wins and shines!

    what do you think?

    I do believe that running a country is different than running a business. Some people believed that it was Romney’s economic advisers who cost him the election. Columbia business school dean Glenn Hubbard is too much of a skeptic on China trade, and he was misguided when he advocated policies that would increase demand for housing at a time when markets were calling for less investment in the sector. Harvard economist Greg Mankiw supported a cheaper dollar, a policy that is damaging to Americans’ efforts to save and invest. American Enterprise Institute economist Kevin Hassett supported a misguided work-sharing idea where companies would reduce hours for some employees and create more jobs for others, missing the point that job creation comes from expanded investment, rather than slicing a finite pie.

    Surprise surprise surprise.

    The Chinese I talked to did not seem to like Romney more. I wonder who were the Chinese sampled? And what was the sample size?

    @Jerry & Chris, networking (关系) is definitely the most important element here. It applies to everywhere, not just in China. Chris is good at social networking and it has helped him tremendously, not just jobwise.

    Knowing Chinese would most likely give you an upper hand, Jerry. However, your appearance and manner do make you worth more than you expected. Wonder how you train people boxing when you dont know Chinese, jabbing and kicking alone wont be enough. right?

    Maybe we could put our ‘connections’ together. am sure it could be a great resource for many foreigners here at the forum.

    any outdoor or indoor meetups will do.

    outdoor: playing balls, gardening, cycling, sightseeing, boxing, etc.

    indoor: pot-lot, dinning, drinking, dancing, swimming, gaming, etc.

    sometimes, chatting itself will be enough. sometimes, trolling in a park is better. different people have different tastes.
