Alan sorry if i dissapoint you but youre in for on hell of a search. I myself study Guqin atm and it took me AGES to find someone willing to teach. To search someone in conservatory you need good chinese, just go to corresponding faculty first (should be Chinese traditional music or maybe wind and string).

On the bright side, Xun is far mor often played than Qin so youll make it faster than me 🙂

http://www.chengduplaces.com/listingtype/bar/ – this can get you started. Use search, Luke. And dont bother with Jellyfish and the like at start.

As for girls – thats not to me, since i prefer to use plain simple prostitutes. So i still have no idea about Chengdu girls, except there ARE some worth hitting on.

For classes i really recommended you 1 on 1 based on you stay duration. Its 5 months so all you really need is some conversational chinese. If you would have stayed here longer than it would be a full scale course. Assuming ofc that you would be able to combine chinese courses with work, which is not an easy feat. Im here 4 months already and still havent found myself a job which would combine well with my full scale chinese courses.

Yeah i could always use more speed to download my porn 🙂

Jokes aside, not bad at all but what are they gonna do with already exiting usual networks? Changing all that to fiber would cause a serious ass pain to anybody doing it.

Any KTV/bar will get you tons of social contacts.

Only dead chinese doesnt play basketball, so its no problem. Tons of soccer and badminton too.

As for classes – finding a private teachers is about as easy as going yo lunch. Average rate is 80 RMB hour atm.

The “Road to success” series work for me so far. Also ranges from “dumb laowai who just came to china” to “I read Confucius in original” levels so you can pick your poison :). Equipped with CD, exercise sheets and something else. Sells in every large bookshop.

They do, although i didnt bother. 3 years for language courses alone, its useless to plan further. Besides i already got enough diplomas on me, 1 more or less – whats the difference 🙂

SWUFE guinea pig 🙂 SWUN isnt bad at all, smallest of the three bad bunch (SU, SWUFE, SWUN). Personally i dont like the location but your mileage can vary. Besides, you can always switch after the 1st semester.

Just exercise modesty at start an youll be fine. I arrived here in september and it took me 1 month to get used to Chengdu and to return to my usual solitary life style (thats in China, hehe) while studying. So unless youre a traditional muslim/jew or some other form of religious/social fanatic i dont think you will have a problem 😀

On a side note, whats the university you are going to?

On a side note Jerry: Have you managed to find/make a decent martial gym? Im struggling to find a place to train at the moment, so if yours is close i want to give it a try.

Chengdu is a bad choice for any martial art really. I am a practicioner myself and after 4 months i still struggle to find a convinient place just to train by myself, let alone learn something new. Try chongqing, much better chances there.

Well i dunno if that of any help, but: for a quite a large bar/tea house withing the 1st ring road, with quite a crappy location it took 200k tranfer fee, around 150k for refurbishing and another 200k for a initial rent period.

Since you have what seems to be a small cafe (ya know, like those family chinese restaraunt all around, ya?) this probably be about 4 times less than that if not more.

All imho, im but a “poor” student here atm 😀 Havent even started to try and examine business possibilities here.
