oh daveyParticipant
Dashan doing standup comedy would be in part due to Des Bishop, an Irish-American comedian who spent his life from the age of 12 in Ireland and Peter from the Bookworm.
Des has spent the last year filming a documentary on China and his experience of trying to master Chinese in 12 months (with no previous knowledge) with the goal of doing a standup show in Chinese.
He’s very popular and famous in Ireland and well known I guess in the UK as he’s been on the comedy circuit for quite some time.
I met him in Xian by chance, is a very genuine guy, and have been a fan of his for quite some time.
Their performances I understand will be entirely in Chinese, so, anyone intending on going should keep that in mind. But it is well worth going to see and meet the guy and getting an autograph of Dashan on your underwear while you’re at it and selling it on Taobao;-)
Good luck Des, and fair play to Peter and all behind the show!!
oh daveyParticipantHi Hugh,
If you don’t like drinking how about joining some club or group. There are many groups on the forum. Best kind are the ones that organise day trips and so on. So, what are your interests? Most groups don’t require you to be a die-hard sport hero as the social element is pretty important to most of them.
Otherwise, join a gym, start a book group if there isn’t one already, join the photowalk.. or go to chinese corner. There are plenty of options especially if you are prepared to put yourself out there.
Also, a lot of expats and travellers do drink but does it define them?
oh daveyParticipantBig campus.. Guess probably be near Kehua Beilu side?
Maybe someone may let us know later.
Thanks Adrien !
oh daveyParticipantIt could turn out to be quite a serious protest considering how little it is publicised.
First time also in our complex I have seen notices (from local PSB office)posted on our doors and elevators cautiously advising people not to protest while assuring them they will have the right to take part in a complaints process or something similar.
Never seen notices posted like that before.
@Slavsky: I’d be a little wary and discrete if you do bring your camera. Maybe bring a more discrete sized camera.
I think police probably ok as they would probably just block you from entering area.
Problems may arise if there are two groups opposing each other, staged or otherwise.
Who knows, nothing much may happen;-)

16号 Renmin North Road 2nd Section, Jinniu
(Not to be confused with the other Wanda Plaza in Jinjiang area.)
@ Ray; Sorry, didn’t compare prices.
Just went “Hey, a Holland & Barrett” and then proceeded to run out the mall as fast I could.
– Shopping is a pain
Reckon they have a good selection, even if they are marked up they are probably still cheaper than a lot of the supplements over here.
oh daveyParticipantHi Sweet
I noticed that there was a UK health chain store called Holland & Barrett in the Midtown Shopping Mall near Renmin Road metro station, north of Tianfu Square.
It’s a discount store that produces it’s own label products as well as others. Seems to be quite popular in UK and Ireland and usually has a lot of 2 for 1 deals.
Also, sells protein tubs for the big boyz!
oh daveyParticipantOops!! I was just kidding that I was still there!
Didn’t have any problems getting back after midnight.
For a first party, with no idea of numbers and little time between Zebra cancellation to party I’d say you should pat yourselves on the backs.
oh daveyParticipantHey,
Met the two lads, Beka & Data on Monday and are really nice guys!
Anyone else have any ideas on possible places?
oh daveyParticipantGreat to think that Des is in Chengdu.
Very funny and popular at home.
My family told me that he would be in China but didn’t know where.
I’ve been told that he is filming a TV show about his experience learning Chinese- should be very funny when it comes out.
“In the Name of the Fada” was a previous TV show he filmed about learning Irish. Excellent!!!
Should be a great show!!
oh daveyParticipantThanks all!!
It was great but how do I get home?
oh daveyParticipantCrap! Pity!
Was looking forward to chilling out, having beers and meeting you guys.
May Day my arse!
oh daveyParticipantQuote:I think any ‘help’ involving the need for transport/travel is a bad idea for obvious reasons, the roads will have been at risk of both damage and gridlock within a short time of the quake happening. Also, best not getting in the way of the rescue effort. There is plenty of manpower already. Having others there, particularly if they don’t speak Chinese creates more work than it does to help.
However, perhaps in the coming weeks it might be on the cards later as an option.
Quote:One option for members of the forum wanting to do something for now might be to donate bloodIt is unfolding as we speak so I agree with you on this.
Best thing way to help is to donate blood and money.
Another question is where to donate money after Red Cross Society of China’s controversies before?
Perhaps via Ya’an Weibo ; Donations hotlines for Longmen Town : 0835—2242305, 0835—2362015 and 0835—2242325 as posted on gochengdu

Quote:ex-pats managed to mobilise help for many people who needed it. I will be looking to see what can be done for those suffering now. Suggest we all do the sameI remember Heart to Heart were involved in advising volunteers how to prepare Care kits
The owner of the Bookwork, Peter Goff was very involved in despatching the kits to the affected areas.
Perhaps anyone who wants to help can start there, or advise if there are any alternatives or they are thinking of organising an event.
It is still quite early regarding news but it is a pretty bad.
CCTV13 reported a truck of 20 soldiers that went off a road into a river on the way to Lushan or nearby area.
Apparently around 50% of the buildings in Lushan have been badly damaged, more in surrounding areas.
A student of mine just told me a friend of hers died, brother injured and family homeless and without food and water.
Edit: I’m not sure if Peter will be involved this time. I don’t personally know him and perhaps if somebody does they may contact him and let us know rather than many people contact him individually.
oh daveyParticipantNice meeting everyone who attended the candlelight vigil 😉
Maggie, you gave me a hangover dammit!
oh daveyParticipantWait till tomorrow to buy your..
They should be a steal!
Anyone reckon they will also have them at the Underground?
oh daveyParticipantI remember reading about him.. unfortunately didn’t meet him.
I think more and more the world is a small place. I know quite a few people from home who have been there, some may still be.
I think the ties for Irish people to Boston, but also the States in general is pretty strong. About 100 people from Ireland I’ve read participated in this years marathon.
I can remember I being a student in SF in 2001 and the shock of watching 9/11 unfold the week after I returned to Ireland.
It is tragic and the true numbers and picture will emerge in the next few days.
Can’t understand why? At the moment I believe they are saying that it might be caused by domestic group.
And that there were other unexploded devices at the scene. A worry.
Marathons in Ireland are pretty lax in terms of security. There are usually smaller racing events every two weeks in Ireland with little security. Always very family orientated and happy occasions.
Best wishes to Boston forum members and hope their families and friends are at least safe.
oh daveyParticipant.. give the hole a name as it made me reminiscent of a very happy time in the past; I was 11 and I had just entered..
oh daveyParticipantSounds pretty cool.
Same, more there for the atmosphere, sun and few beers and hopefully hear some good tunes;-)
What day you guys and others going. Couldn’t imagine going to it for 3 days, a bit to hardcore for me!
oh daveyParticipantTomorrow, I will be collecting for Conservative Future (CF) formally known as Conservative Youth at the Underground tomorrow.
We need your support!
oh daveyParticipantNo sympathy at all then 😉
What can I get done from the medical menu. Hmm!!…
An espresso and a colonoscophy please with two sugars 😉
