Hey , i moved here from the uk last august as my boyfriend and i both secured teaching jobs. We had never even heard of chengdu before , so had no idea what to expect. Friends who had visited China before tried to describe it to us ,but to be honest you can never really explain what it is like, you just need to experience it yourself. Its crazy -sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way but its an amazing country to live. It took me around 3months to get over “culture shock ” as it is so unbelievably different and even today i can see something that surprises me. Chengdu is a great place -still not overrun with western culture, cheap , and the best food i have ever eaten in my life however there are some downsides that come with living in a slighty less-known and smaller city. There is a big lack of clubs /groups for younger women. In terms of sport ,unless you want to play rugby there is nothing else. I was also a member of a book group which fizzled out due to lack of members. A Lot of the opportunities to meet people revolve around club/ bar events so if you like going out then you Will be fine. Apart from this its a great place to live ,and its been a great experience for us.

    Hello,

Yes the picture above is part of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, which is located No. 25 Ping’an Alley. It is the only Catholic Church/ service in Chengdu, and nearest metro stop is Luomashi. If you pick up a go chengdoo magazine it is on the map inside.

It is not near Tongzillin, I believe that is the Christian Fellowship Church.

The English service is held at 4pm every Saturday. See you there!

@Rick in China : Oh I felt sure someone had told me that they were top…then again maybe it’s just because I have seen so many old people wandering around, many of whom look AT LEAST 100years old… made me think cooking oil has some unknown nutritional benefit! 🙂

    Hey Jessica,

It depends what you mean by healthy- if you mean super healthy like no oil/ carbs/ salt then I think you would find it hard, but if you mean just a normal healthy balanced diet then I think you will have no problem.

Since moving to Chengdu I am eating more vegetables than I have ever eaten in my life, and generally the dishes here are heavier on veg content than meat, which for guys is probably a bad thing but for women I think its pretty healthy. There are many supermarkets selling western products so you can always cook western food at home if you prefer. I eat a lot of fruit here and what is great is the sheer variety of fruti available. Also its a lot cheaper than back home. Not sure you should worry too much about the pesticides on the fruit- I eat all my fruit after a quick rinse under the tap and I have NEVER got sick from it.

Finally, it is pretty healthy in terms of the low usage of dairy- something which I had a lot of before I came here. I have found some low fat milk in Hong Qi supermarkets, and to me it tastes fine, a lot better than the full fat version that is readily available.

I think people worry about the food here but at the end of the day Chinese people are on the whole slim and active, and I believe have the longest lifespan ?! so i’m sure the food can’t be all bad!

this does sound good but I am looking for somewhere to go on Christmas Day for a traditional Christmas dinner, afternoon time. Crowne Plaza has been mentioned, but aparently the time is 8-9pm, and they don’t have turkey, which is an absolute must! Can anyone recommend somewhere for Christmas Day?

Well can anybody explain me that? It just doesn´t make sense to my south European point of view. Back home, when it´s freezing, we turn on any warming device and then close the windows to keep the space warm… is that behaviour that weird? And closing the doors and windows when the room is warm, is such behaviour that bizarre

Tell me about it- I have been trying to figure this one out myself. None of us would need to buy all of these extra clothes/heating devices if they simply kept the buildings warm. The whole windows open thing drives me crazy- half of my office are sick with colds/coughs and wonder why they are sick. Maybe because you have the window wide open and it is 3 degrees inside?! I am from the North of England which is certainly colder than Chengdu, but winter just doesn’t feel as bad because you know when you get indoors you will be warm. I definitely think the idea here of “keeping the windows open to let out the germs” was started by an electric blanket/thermal clothing company.

Thanks for all the tips the good news is I have just found it on Waifood website! A little overpriced at 45rmb for 2 small pots but as I live near Shipu the waifood delivery service is much more appealing than a trek to the Tongzillin carrefour! Its a good website for western products in general so if anyone hasn’t seen it before check it out – http://www.waifood.com they deliver for 5rmb

Hi Oliver no your english freeview box won’t work over here unfortunately.

I have also tried to look into digital, as the standard Chinese TV has only 1 english channel, which is a world news channel. A friend of mine has got Satellite TV (which I believe has american stations), but she paid quite a lot of money for the installation, and had to sign for 2 years. I think the best way to get English TV is to get a good internet connection and a good VPN, then you can get on BBC iplayer, 4OD and ITV player.

Thanks for the advice guys, but unfortunately I don’t have any chinese friends 🙁 just a girl I work with, but I won’t see her until next week. I really want to get it sorted as it is really draining my funds. When I got the sim card I don’t think we asked for internet access, but i am not sure as our schools sorted it out. Is there any way I can sort this on my own? on the connections page, it says network mode- dual mode or GSM, which one shall i put? and in the “data use” part I have put WLAN only, but it doesnt seem to make a difference!
