Ari Shaffir is coming to China. You should try to book him for a night. I would definitely come.

It would be great, unfortunately well above our budget at the moment, if we can build a scene here though then who knows what could be possible in the future.

Yes the area is a little far away from the bars/restaurants in the city center. If you plan on eating/drinking out later than the last metro then it is going to be about a 30 min cab ride home. Probably good to look a little closer to the city, and as Jeremy mentioned above, your not really going to be saving much money by living in the area close to your work.

If you need help looking for an apartment, we have an agency that can help you and provide after sales service for the full lease term. We specialize in the south and central areas of Chengdu.

A person who has all the qualifications that you ask for should be earning at least double what you are offering.

Perhaps the salary is competitive for Mianyang but it certainly is not for Chengdu.

Justin is right two days is enough to walk to the top spending a night at a monastery on the way up. If you want to start first thing in the morning then you can stay at Teddy Bear Hostel at the bottom of the mountain, they have all types of beds and the owner is very helpful. He can even call and reserve a monastery bed for you. although you don’t need to.

After you get to the top you have four options:

1- walk down, pointless really and is hard on the legs.

2- bus straight down, costs around 50 RMB and will take you to ba guo si bus station where you can take a bus to Chengdu.

3- stay at a hotel on the top and wake for the 5am sunrise, this is very expensive approx. 500 per night.

4- stick around and wait until the sunrise, a tiring option but the most popular amongst young Chinese. After take the bus down.

On a clear day the sunrise is breathtaking, if it is not clear you have stayed up all night for nothing.

The buses to Emei leave from xin nan men station and are every 6 minutes during peak time. Don’t bother waiting for the ba guo si bus, some of them don’t even go there anyway. Just get the bus to the city then jump in a van when they come on the bus looking for you, shouldn’t pay more than 10 kuai a head.

When coming back to Chengdu, buses from the main bus station leave every 20 minutes, buses from ba guo si leave every hour.

Be prepared for the following prices

    Return bus to Emei 85
    taxi to the mountain 10-20
    entrance ticket 150
    night at monastery 30-100
    bus down mountain 50

Also food is a obviously not cheap on the mountain, you will eat a regular Chinese meal for around 20-30 kuai.

Unfortunately it is not a cheap trip anymore, the mountain has become big business. Luckily for me my wife’s family live on the mountain so everything is free (:

I know this is a long post but hopefully somebody finds it useful. It’s rare something comes up that I actually know about.

The formula my company uses for tax calculation is this:

    Gross – 4800 = X

    X x 20% = Y

    Y- 555 = Total tax paid

No idea if this is standard or not but it is what I get charged, my pay is not too different to yours.

Okay, I was in the PSB today and this is what I learned:

    i) They are back accepting applications from tomorrow, they had asked for emergency only these last two days.

ii) They are currently in a trial period of the new law, at the moment it is still possible to do everything that you could do before July 1st, the old rules still apply. During this period they will be introducing people to the new visas and seeing if they are possible to enforce. All the while still working off the old rule book.

iii) They expect this trial period to last between one and two months.

iv) After they have finished the trial period they will decide to adopt all, some or none of the new laws in Chengdu.

    v) Because of the above it is impossible for them to tell you what the visa regulations are going to be like in two months time.

vi) With regard to my own query (changing from work to marriage visa) they said at the moment it is possible, however, if they decide to fully implement the law then it maybe impossible to change visa type without leaving the country.

My advice is if you want a visa then get it now. If you want advice on future regulations then just wait, no point in asking them now, they simply don’t know.

    Hope this helps.

I guess I’m one of many with a visa query at the moment so thought I’d throw mine in here. Next month my work visa runs out and I want to move onto the marriage visa in order to stay for a few weeks before moving on. However, I have heard a rumor that due to the new laws, you cannot change your visa type inside China.

Does anybody know anything about this? I’m going to ask the PSB tomorrow anyway but I’m interested what people here think.

    Cheers.
