As for alcohol, good beer and wine are both available. If u are not a big drinker, then i would not worry about it really. Good wine hereismore plentiful than it usedto be, but it gets a fat tax onit. You mightjust wanna bring a nice bottle for your coworker, but other than that dont worry. W will get a liquor resource up here soon.

^^That’s true. It’s the Exit Stamp that’s important, because that stamp allows you to leave (and come back) on your NZ (foreign passport), thereby “activating” it.

The Exit stamp usually requires a marriage certificate and birth certificate to establish the kids identity and nationality. Keep us posted

Decathalon, near the Ikea. Good stuff, high quality, but no jeans — shoes are cool though.

    all very interesting questions:

as for credit cards, you dont want a chinese one anyway. the interest rates are unbelievable, charged by the day and you MUST pay off your balance by the end of the month. If you are over, the interest is calculated off of the total amount of credit o.O …. get one from a US bank and have them send it to you.

transferring money out of here is a big pain in the ass and not really the best way unless its a very large sum. What I do is call my local money changer dude (Charles might direct you to a certain Englishman we both know who has that number, I lost the number unfortunately) and then take that cash to Western Union (no hassles, fees) or to Hong Kong (slight hassle, less fees).

Transferring large amounts of money out of China will require a paper trail as to where that cash came from, plus fees that I can’t foresee. And don’t want to. If you (or someone you know) has a registered company, then the process is smoother, but still requires a paper trail.

brother. How did you have the baby without her being married? she needs to be married to have the “permission to give birth” document that most hospitals require to give a birth certificate? No matter, that document is archaic and unimportant. But as far as I know, in order to get an exit stamp from the PSB, you’ll have to provide a marriage certificate along with a bunch of other documents that I list here:

Raising a Child in Chengdu: Nationality

If you were able to give birth, get a birth certificate and take that to the NZ embassy and get an NZ passport, then you are already about 80% there. Going to your wife’s hometown and sitting down with some people might help you in negotiations with the PSB.

or. dude. marry her. which would solve it.

Marriage in china takes about 15 minutes and 3 days for docs to come through.

age limit sounds like BS, but i agree with Ben, you NEVER KNOW. The only people who can answer this question are the actual PSB officers at the municipal entry exit bureau. and you have to go there in person. emails, websites and phone calls will only confuse you. Your eventual school will handle this for you. If this is your first time, then get a job at a school, let them handle all the bs, get situated, then make yourself independent (if you so choose) after 6 months to a year.

yeah i was just there in march, did that little climb. its pretty scary. the dudes that sell you the climbing tools (sorry dont know what those lil locks are called) are real dickfaces. its a Daoist mtn and they are PUMPING techno music while a fake ass monk stands there collecting cash. its wak. the whole mtn has been raped by ignorance and commercialism. but the climb is dope. get there late bro, and start climbing around 2 or so pm, you’ll see all the people walking down and then you’ll have the place to yourself all evening and most of the morning if you spend the night. if you bring gear, you can pass out under a pine tree or something, windy and cold, but bearable. or you can bring some whiskey and just drank with yer pals. If you stay there, get a ten room dorm at the east peak for 100RMB a bed. Dont let them force you into the 2 or 4 bedroom spot. what else … the sunrise off the east peak can be magnificent, but only if the smog is gone. which it aint. unless yer luck as all hell. sorry to stomp on the hike bro, but i figure i’d let you know what is and what isnt. the mtn is awesome. but the people get in the way. so like i said, climb in the afternoon, crash somewhere, get up early and climb down while the hordes climb up …
