I’ve heard good things about “chandi” or “tomato” brand ovens

Shouldn’t we all be on the doomsday boat?

The ones I’m used to are quite soft and often very sweet. Mine was a lot more like bread, as was the last donut I tried here. Maybe they are using a kneaded dough like the Chinese donut? Either way, the chocolate on top was very good. I will definitely try more stuff there.

There’s one next to the Starbuck’s at Daye and Jinxing. Had the donut….not impressed. Kinda stretches my definition of “donut”. Closer to a bagel with chocolate on top. Or maybe it was 4 days old.

    PT-

I’ve gotten one recommendation for back country skiing, but it’s mountaineering terrain (near “the camel”). My thinking is to ski whatever looks good near a road. Along S303, between Wolong and Rilongzhen, there’s a pass at 4600m with plenty of tree-less terrain around. And I have seen other big grassy mountains around there, but getting there is the hard part.

For climbing, there are crags at lower altitudes, somewhere. Just have to gather the info.

    Nancy-

    Welcome to CL,

I suppose transportation is the hard part for getting to Xiling too. I have no idea how many locals bring their own skis to the mountian, but I don’t think I’ve seen many ski racks on old Jettas running around town. Several people on the list have talked about renting a van and going to Xiling. Who has a driver’s license here?

It’s nice that apple maps have Metro line two, but there isn’t much else. Try searching for the apple store!

Google standalone map app is now available!

Wow Charlie, it sure looks like pollution affected your avatar. By the way, I’ve got this construction project I’d like to talk to you about.

Agreed. Doubling your coffee dosage should be one of the Chengdu survival tips.

    How big is that wall?

Is it near this Decathlon: 四川省成都市金牛区 西华大道6号?

There is a Decathlon near the new Survivor too.

I think it will depend on transportation & operating hours. The new place is a little closer to the subway.

Also, my wife and I bought a ten pack of passes at the old survivor, so we’re committed to that for a little longer.

And it looks like we can’t go this Thursday, so we’re going tonight instead.

I think I’ll need to spend some time at altitude before I try to ski a summit. But that’s what I’d like to do.

The first step should probably be to hike up Dagunianshan (lowest of the 4 sisters/ladies).

Other than that I’m willing to ski anything snow patch I can find. Anybody else here have an avalanche beacon?

There’s some granite in that neighborhood too, so I’m looking for a trad partner.

As far as in-bound skiing, I don’t really know. I heard a rumor a couple years ago that they are building a big ski area in the Tianshan, but I have no other info. That’s supposed to be the best snow in China.

There are a bunch are Beijing, but I think they make a lot of snow because it’s so dry there.

Xiling snow mountain is on my to-do list of course. Anybody got a snow report?

Stopped by there yesterday. It’s a bigger wall, but also 50 kuai to climb, vs 30 at the “old” Survivor. And a lot of kids running around here.

Hmm…trash in the water…that’s weird. I’d like get some kind of water quality data, since I plan to make beer out of it. The only data I’ve got is that my wife’s mother drinks it, and no problems so far.

I was up there about a month ago. Highly recommended. But road is in terrible condition, a truck would be better than a car.

I think the only requirement would be a. you like beer b. don’t stick your fingers in it. I’m not sure when I’ll be ready to brew, but beer tasting is an important skill for a beer brewer.

My immediate focus is to culture yeasts, so I’m actively looking for agar (vegetarian jello), petri dishes and some glass rod (that could be shaped into cell culture tools). Throw in a pressure cooker and the microbiology lab will be operational.

Awesome! That’s very close to where I live. If they don’t charge a minimum I might actually go.
