Yeah, at the 21st floor level we get the smell and well as the particles, and it smells like burning up here. We had a lot of this in the fall, someone told us that farmers were burning their fields. It makes more sense than any construction related pollution, because Mianyang and Deyang had super high PM10 over the weekend too.

I will climb at least one day Tues/Wed/Thurs this week, but I’m hoping for reasonably clean air.

Checked my math, it looks like we had about 1ppm PM2.5+PM10 last night, or about 1mg of dirt for every cubic meter of air.

Ikea will deliver and assemble here, prices aren’t bad, and I think the prices might even be lower than the US, in general.

Also, if you get a furnished apartment, you may find the beds too firm; Ikea sells thin mattresses that really help soften the bed.

HA HA HA! China MEP is at 415, maybe still rising. What the hell’s going on out there? PM10 at 515 in the middle of the night!?!

There are various ways to transfer money, see other threads here.

One option that is not mentioned very often is to use a check – it’s slow, but it’s a flat fee, so might be better depending on the amounts.

For small amounts, Bank of America and China Construction Bank work together so I can get withdrawals at decent rate through an ATM, although I don’t seem to be able to make deposits at an ATM.

Foreign credit cards are hard to use here, but not impossible. As far as I know, you can use them to buy airline tickets, and to shop at Ikea if you ask nicely.

That’s a little early for me, usually I’d be eating dinner, but I could do it. What do you think Charlie?

I have a small set of tools, and have done this kind of thing before (actually a really big dish). I would would for cash, good beer or maybe some little things needed around the apartment.

Agreed – I was looking for chocolate and beer in there the other day, they have less selection and much higher prices than Carrefour.

From the Waterfront you can ride east or south to get to some less developed areas.

To the east, just west of the 4th ring, there is Shiling Forest Park. It has dirt roads and looks like it is used for commercial forestry, but it is quiet and green. The area just south of there, Honghe, is somewhat rural.

I haven’t been to the areas south east of the city, but the guys at Natooke ride out there often and could make some suggestions.

Awesome! I haven’t been to the local crags, from what I’ve gathered they are more about sport. But there are some big granite walls & peaks out there too.

Kinda, I’m going tonight. We usually go kinda late.

On a related note – anybody want to go climb outside? I’ve got a trad rack that’s getting dusty.

They also have a few pretty scenery pictures, but none of the actual slopes.

The wooden house on the homepage is actually there, it’s the blue squareish thing on the map next to yellow trail. It’s a fairly realistic map too. But all the other photos I saw on their site are from other places.

I’m using MotionX-GPS on my iphone to record my hikes, very handy. Someday I hope catch up to that “Jack Gross” guy, he’s done a lot of cool stuff.

On the other hand, there’s a new ski area, called Taiziling, just north of Wenchuan. They were only running a magic carpet when we there last weekend, but they are working on a quad chair. The hill served by the chair is sorta steep too, maybe east-coast black diamond. Or maybe not, hard to tell when you’re walking (we did not ski). Long term plans are to get 1500m of vertical.

Here’s my GPS of a hike started at the ski area:

That’s what I get for trying to remember things that happened before the internet.
