LarryParticipantLarryParticipant
This is actually a challenge by local roadies due to a slight misquote in an article written about us a couple weeks back. We at Natooke never walk away from an ass whoop’n.
LarryParticipantQuote:You know… like nunchaku skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills… Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills!– Napoleon Dynamite, 2004
LarryParticipantQuote:Will get a bike from the school me and my girlfriend will be teaching at and I know it will probably be something along the lines of a Flying Pigeon. I know you guys have a bike rental service, that still the case? I’ll definitely be dropping by at Natooke when I get over to Chengdu and will have to pester you even more for cycling-related info ha!Flying Pigeons … they certainly don’t make them like they used to. If you get one I recommend you look for an old one, older the better.
We still do rentals, 20 or 50rmb/day depending on the bike, less if you rent for longer periods.
We ride all over and around Chengdu frequently so we will happily give you any recommendations or cycling related info when you swing by.
Quote:I would like to see a Cannondale (that was my bike of choice back home)…Ray, LOHAS that Jacob mentioned is starting to carry Cannondale. PM Jacob or I for the shop address and we can give the owner a heads up that you’ll be by if you’re interested in getting one. Don’t know for sure exactly how much but I suspect they’ll be pricey too.
LarryParticipantwe’ll hang around here for a little while after nine. when do you think you can get here? call the shop (8504 2450) and or PM me your number and we’ll figure out how to rendezvous in the event you can’t make it by 9:30ish.
LarryParticipantYeah. That kid’s nuts! He spends 30-45 minutes every day at the salon to get his hair done up. I asked his buddy how much each session costs and did a rough tally and he alone spends about 4000 yuan annually on his hair.
LarryParticipantI know a few long-term expats (Beijing mainly) that came to 5 consecutive years in China on z visas. They just had to leave China for a 30 day period before the fifth year was up then re-enter on the same visa. Does anyone know if this is different province to province?

LarryParticipantSaturdays @ 4pm directly at the Sichuan Provincial Gymnasium or come by the shop first and head over with us together.

LarryParticipantVincent, you’re lucky your own key still worked. She doesn’t sound like a very useful attendant, however nice she may be, since the person was still permitted to try to take your bike. I know many people who have had their bikes stolen from “attended” places. There is zero motivation for those people to interrupt a theft seeing as they are not responsible to replace your bike if it is stolen. Just gives a false sense of security.
LarryParticipantDefinitely use a decent quality U or chain lock, lock your bike to something immobile, and try to find a place either that it isn’t super visible to any passers-by or one that is incredibly visible. And don’t pay any attention to anyone who says you can’t park you bike in a place that allows you to achieve the aforementioned criteria.
LarryParticipantLike Charlie and Vincent mentioned, being self-motivated to spend the necessary time is an absolute requisite to learning Mandarin. I found having 1-on-1 classes with a qualified teacher to be very helpful in the beginning of the learning process. A good teacher will help you form good habits and gets you on the right track to be more adept at studying/learning on my own.
Have you learned a foreign language before? Different people have different success with different methods. Just take the advice you get from this forum, Charlie’s other articles, and from wherever else you get advise and try all of it. Once you figure out what mode of studying gets you speaking/understanding effectively, maintains your motivation/interest to keep at it, and affords you the support of actually feeling like you’re making good progress then focus on that. I had a language teacher who gave sage advise: “lo mejor lugar aprender un idioma es en la cama.” His point was to thoroughly live the language and find the motivation to do so.
LarryParticipantQuote:I really want to see this!me too. I’m super curious of how all the ongoing projects will pan out over time and what the final goal of it all will be.
Thanks for posting!
LarryParticipantI suppose a congratulations is in order?
LarryParticipantQuote:70km in 2.5 hours? uphill? damn…. would love to get back into biking, but that aint no beginner sh*tIt was only mildly uphill some of the time. On account of having to get back by mid-day our Tues morning ride is a bit intense. We regularly do evening cruises when traffic is lighter (this Friday for instance) as well as rides on Sundays at a more manageable a pace.
Next time definitely have to try the 腊肉, thanks for the recommendation
LarryParticipantWore Respros on the ride this morning. It seemed worse, or at least looked worse, on the way out to 青城山 than in the city center.
LarryParticipantCharlie, let me know when the “small group” gets together and count me in. I’m a non-spoiled long-time skier/snowboarder and am curious as can be of what this is actually like.
