Woah, Cold Cave in China? That would be worth going..

My jaw hit the floor pretty hard as soon as I saw Cold Cave. Going to have to try and convince my girlfriend to go. Missed them when they played Manchester two years ago before I moved there, not going to miss them again!

    Check on aftershocks TODAY

Was checking that earlier on and it is a bit disconcerting the frequency of some of the mid-range aftershocks. Mind, my girlfriend found a source stating that there have been 35 aftershocks above 3.0 but if you take into account lower than that the total of aftershocks as of this afternoon was something like 256.

And to think earthquakes is the last thing we thought about checking out as far as Chengdu is concerned hahah!

Joining in late but this was quite terrifying.

I obviously was not in Chengdu in 2008 but it was not the first time for me being abruptly woken up by an earthquake. Even on the 11th floor we felt it pretty damn hard even though nothing fell off anything in our apartment. Growing up in Italy I always had to go through earthquake drills and have always been told that if you can you should always leave the building and go into the closest open space, which is quite different from what people here seem to imply. No one, even back in the day, would have ever suggested to hang out in the near vicinity of a building during or after a quake, the advice has always been to go to an open space far away from any building or anything that could basically fall on you.

As an aside, I am not a morning person but within 3 seconds of waking up because of the quake I was up shouting orders to my girlfriend as to what to do. Poor thing has never experienced a significant earthquake. Still, was pretty scary how strong some of the aftershocks were.

Looks like I’ll just brave one of the fancier looking places with a picture. I have had some seriously botched jobs in England where they bloody speak the language so can’t go much worse. Right?

As for the hat, I will heed the warning. Not sure I am ready for a K-pop do yet.

Definitely nothing to do with construction (at least I think). We live just underneath the construction for the second ring road and it is full of them down here but got covered quite a bit on my cycle to school and I work half way between the second ring road and Ito Yokado/Walmart in Chenghua.

What immovable object did you lock your bike to?

    Does ‘Nothing’ count?

I had been warned that bike thievery was rife in China but didn’t think that they would be so bold to steal it with the wheel lock, in broad daylight and in an area where I am pretty much the only Westener (bar my girlfriend).

At least I know that the rule I use back in the UK of having a D-lock will also, and especially, apply here in China. Learned the hard way, but at least I’ve learnt.

This is still Georgia, btw. I just realised I’m on my boyfriend’s laptop and his account is logged in!

I will definitely have to try that! The food was so good I’m probably going to go back tonight. Places to drink on a Friday? Preferably with decent cocktails?

Another Italian in Chengdu over here!

Definitely cook Italian food yourself, a lot easier and it’s actually quite cheap. You can find pasta pretty much at any of the bigger supermarkets but not in local Chinese ones and usually it’s quite cheap (Ito Yokado seems to do the cheapest) but pasta sauce is a sore subject. You can get American-style pasta sauce but not passata like we have it in Italy, so if you don’t mind that then you are good. If not peeled tomatoes are cheap too but forget about parmigiano, that’s simply not going to happen.

So, about a couple of weeks ago I posted that ‘A Week in Chengdu and still No Clue’ thread and the whole issue of bike thievery came up. Well, today I have been at the receiving end of Chinese bike thievery. Went to the supermarket outside my complex on Fuqing Road where it meets the 2nd ring road, left my bike outside LOCKED, was in the supermarket 15 minutes and came back to see that my LOCKED bike had vanished. Pretty pissed off, not as much because the bike got stolen but because was the school’s I am teaching at and now I have to buy a replacement bike as it’s my responsibility. Can’t really afford to piss money up the wall for a bike at this stage, so that’s what’s really pissing me off.

With that in mind, where can I get a LEGIT used bike for sale? Can’t really be dealing with spending upwards of 200RMB for a new bike just for some asshole to steal it AGAIN.

What exactly is that stuff that they eat that is served in a cut up pineapple. Went down Jinli yesterday and everyone seemed to be on a feeding frenzy where that snack was concerned.

Just got this album today, pretty good. I really like this video. Maybe this band Foals is well known in the UK? I hadn’t heard of them until a few weeks ago.

Yeah, they became pretty huge very quickly when they released their first album about 5 years ago. Definitely check it out though, it’s called ‘Antidotes’, kind of similar to ‘Holy Fire’ but more mathy and avoid like the plague their second album. Absolutely awful.

The odd thing is that both me and Georgia ate the calamari but I am absolutely fine. She says I have a stomach made of cast iron so I am a very tough target for dodgy food but given the food at Pizza Hut was clearly contaminated, I expected to get ill too.

Maybe I’m just looking at the wrong place, but is The Bookworm open until late on a week-end? As Georgia said, we’ve tried Peter’s Tex-Mex and the burger there was among the best I’ve ever eaten but would be nice to try another Western joint as our week-end treat. The Bookworm is a candidate but not sure about opening times.

Natooke is definitely on my list of places to check out ASAP. Too skint to afford buying a proper good bike so intrigued to find out renting prices. Or if anyone knows where to get a cheap second hand bike I’d appreciate that. Would definitely never buy a stolen bike, I’d go absolutely insane if someone stole my bike back in the UK and I would want to find the lowlife scum that did it so not about to be one of those people.

As for eating suggestions, will definitely check them out! Especially the streets along the river Stephen suggests. Pretty close so it’s a shame not to go for it, especially if there is the best noodle place in the city!

Only been in Chengdu a week and I am alerady suffering from the pollution, my lungs are absolutely shot to shit and keep coughing. What is the deal with pollution looking even worse after midnight? Was up at 1am and could barely see anything from my window bar the bright neon signs of various buildings in the area, which even I can tell is unusual.

I lived up in that area for a couple years and while a bit out of the way from a lot of what is going on I really liked it. Are you doing something with UESTC?

For transport it kind of sucks, 49 and I think 7 that go from over by Carrefour can get you places but a bike or e-bike was how I did it most of the time.

Yeah, we are English teachers and teach at two of the schools attached to the UESTC. I teach at the middle school on Shuangjian and my girlfriend teaches at the primary schools around Fuqing.

Will definitely check out the 49 + 7 combo to get to town until I manage to find a way to fix the shitty bike my school has given me.

I head up that way sometimes to see friends, I’ll shoot you a PM next time and maybe we can meet up and I show you a couple spots. Don’t worry I knew no one when I first moved to Chengdu and felt really isolated up there at first but now that I have moved down to “fashionable” Yulin I kind of miss it up there.

That would be amazing! Me and my girlfriend don’t really know anyone in Chengdu and are finding it a bit difficult to find our way. So to actually meet someone that we can speak to without trouble and to get to see what is there around the area would be absolutely fantastic!

Think we may try to hit some bars the coming week-end so if you see two English-speaking foreigners that look lost/bemused/a combination of the two, then good chances are it’s me and my girlfriend. So far cooking our own food and a noodle place near my school have proven the only two safe bet food-wise but we are definitely open to try different places, so thank you very much for the help!

Well, thanks to all of you for the help and the bits of info. Only few days before me and my girlfriend arrive in China and less than two weeks before we arrive in Chengdu. Maybe see some of you around town!
